In addition to all its trou- bles involved concerning Lebanon, the sports frater- nity in Israel is having its problems so far as interna- tional competition i s con- cerned. For many years now, dur- ing the winter vacation period, seven or eight na- tional junior soccer teams have attended an interna- tional competition in Israel, which has proved to be very fruitful and has produced excellent soccer. This year, due, undoubtedly, to pres- sures from political leaders in the respective countries involved, Romania and Is- rael are the only countries willing to participate in the annual tournament. In past years, Greece, Switzerland, Sweden, De- nmark, West Germany, Italy and France, have sent their teams to play in the Youth Tournament which had grown in stature and prestige. BONN (JTA). — West Germany's new Chancellor, Helmut Kohl, has a sym- pathetic attitude toward Is- rael, according to Knesset Speaker Menahem Savidor who met with the German leader last week. "He told me he wanted to renew the tradition of good relations started by Konrad Adenauer and I am sure that he seriously meant exactly that," Savidor told a press conference. He said Kohl will defi- nitely visit Israel next year but the timing has yet to be decided. It will not take place before West Ger- many's general elections due to be held on March 6. eration has tried assidu- ously, without effect, to get the other countries, generally interested, to come and play. Con- sequently, it appears that for the first time in over a decade there will not be an international tourney. In the past, American soccer teams have tried to secure an invitation from the Israeli Soccer Federa- tion for participation in this prestigious event, without success. The reason ad- vanced at all times was that the United States could not send its national junior team. This is true, because of the fact that the youngsters are either in their senior year in high school and/or their freshman year in college and getting them together for such a trip seems out of the question. However, a solution, which, finally, seemed ac- ceptable to the Israeli fed- eration was reached when the New York State junior soccer squad decided that it would go to Israel during the Christmas holiday, pro- vided it secured an invita- tion. Apparently the invita- tion is forthcoming but now the New York federation is finding it difficult to secure the necessary funds, and in addition, has learned about the lack of interest on the part of the countries for- merly involved, and con- sequently is undecided as to whether it will make the trip come the middle of next month./ . ill.
