Anti-Semitic Incidents

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Is-
raeli lawyers were not per-
mitted to attend the conven-
tion of the International Bar
Association in New Delhi,
according to the daily
Haaretz. The international
groups informed the Israeli
association that lawyers
from Israel and from South
Africa would not be wel-
come.
Meanwhile, a survey says
that a total of 11,000 anti-
Semitic actions were re-
corded throughout the
Western world in 1981.
Quoting opinion polls in a
number Of countries, the re-
port said that 70 percent of
Austrians, 50 percent of
West Germans and Swiss,
and 35 percent of Ameri-
cans were openly hostile to
Jews.
There are 30 neo-Nazi
organizations in the U.S.
according to the survey and
in West Germany 19 kil-
lings were carried out by

neo-Nazi groups.
The American corre-
spondent of the Israeli
Hebrew morning daily
Davar, Yosef Prial, re-
ports a wave of anti-
Semitic feeling sweeping
Latin America:
Anti-Semitic and anti-
Israel slogans appeared on
synagogues and Jewish
cemeteries in Mexico. In
Venezuela, some
synagogues were stoned
and swastikas painted on
Jewish institutional build-
ings. A gang of anti-Semites
broke into the Israeli em-
bassy and smeared the
walls with anti-Semitic slo-
gans.
A large anti-Israel
demonstration took place in
Colombia. In Bogota, Col-
ombia's capital city, anti-
Semites bombed the build-
ing housng the Israeli em-
bassy. Other anti-Semitic
incidents were reported in
Guatemala.

By MOSHE BEN-YOSEF
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
For the first time, the popu-
lation of Israel has passed
the four million mark
(within border's which in-
clude Greater Jerusalem).
Within this figure, 83 per-
cent are Jewish, 13 percent
Moslem, 2.5 percent Chris-
tian and 1.5 percent Druze.
Clearly, the fear that the
Jews might become a
minority in their own coun-
try has not proven justified.
"The respectable demog-
raphers who tried to
frighten us with their
prophecies must recognize
their mistake," Prime
Minister Menahem Begin
told Herut leaders recently.
Nevertheless, there are
two sides to the coin. Aliya,
down to less than 15,000 in
1967, only increased when
the gates of the USSR were
opened, pushing immigra-
tion in the early 1970s to
over 50,000 per year.
Though it is agreed that in-
creased aliya in the 1980s is
imperative, opinions differ
on the possibility, as on the
controversy surrounding
the problem of "Yerida"
(emigration).
Furthermore, while
only 25 percent of Jewish

families in Israel have
five children, the fig-
ure for Israeli Arab
families is 65 percent. Al-
though the latter rate is
dropping, Arab natural
increase now doubles
that of the Jews.
While the Arabs com-
prised 11 percent of the Is-
raeli population in 1968,
today they constitute 15
percent. Some demog-
raphers believe this figure
may rise to 20 percent by
the year 2000. (If including
the administered ter-
ritories, the figure would
jump to 45 percent.)

The conclusion of litiga-

lection from Princeton Uni-
versity, where Einstein
taught.
