The Jews were expelled
from Spain in 1492. Many if
not most of the victims of
the inquisition over the
next 200 years were Mar-
ranos, Jews who formally
converted to the Catholic
faith but continued to prac-
tice their own religion in
secret.
The Pope, who was on
"a spiritual visit" to
Spain, met with leaders

community with whom,
he said, "We have a com-
mon spiritual heritage."
The World Jewish Con-
gress reported that the
Jewish leaders met Nov. 3
with the Pope and criticized
his recent meeting in Rome
with PLO chief Yasir
Arafat.
In a related development,
the American Jewish
Committee urged that dif-
ferences - between the
Jewish and Catholic com-
munities over the meeting
of the Pope and Arafat
should not be allowed to
"impede the advances in
understanding and mutual
esteem which have marked
the relations between our
communities for the past
several decades."
U.S. Colonel Refutes
Criticism of Israel
U.S. Col. Trevor N.
Dupuy (Ret.), a West Point
graduate, who went to Is-
rael at his own expense in
preparation for a book he is
writing on the Middle East
and Israel, has disputed vil-
lifications against Israel
and justified that nation's
military actions in Leba-
non.
In a lengthy article in the
Jerusalem Post, inter-
viewed by Pearl Sheffy Gef-
fen, he reviewed the exist-
ing situations and declared:
"Tales of wanton destruc-
tion and devastation of such
cities as Tyre, Sidon,
Damour and Nabatiye are
not only inconsistent with
my own combat experience
and the various studies I
have made on the nature of
urban destruction in past
wars, but were obviously
contrary to what I saw in
those cities.
"Assertions that the Is-
raeli occupation of
Southern Lebanon has
been marked by a harsh-
ness comparable to the
Nazi actions would be
laughable, were it not for
the tragic and brutal
enormity of the compari-
sons."

The view was expressed
by Maynard Wishner, AJ-
Committee president, in a
letter to Johannes Cardinal
Willebrands, president of
the Vatical Commission on
Religious Relations with
the Jews.
The letters were re-
leased at the national
executive council meet-
ing of the AJCommittee
in Los Angeles.
Among other explana-
' tions, Willibrands said,
"The fact that the Holy
Father receives someone in
audience is in no way a sign
of approval of all the ideas
and actions attributed to
that person."
The Cardinal also wrote
that "the Holy Father did
not fail to express to Mr.
Arafat 'the hope that an
Col. Dupuy takes the In-
ternational Herald Tribune
to task for a report by Los
Angeles Times correspon-
dent J. Michael Kennedy.
Kennedy, writing from Be-
irut, claimed that the dam-
age done by the Israelis dur-
ing the ivnvasion made the
Lebanese civil war of 1975-
1976 "seem almost minor."
"One wonders if Mr. Ken-
nedy ever visited Damour,"
Dupuy said. "Once one of
the most beautiful cities in
Lebanon, (Damour is) now 4
ghost town. It was totally
destroyed and many of its
Christian inhabitants were
killed by the PLO fighters
in 1976."
The colonel reported that
life in the occupied towns
and villages was continuing
at a near normal pace. The
only signs of an Israeli mili-
tary presence was a passing
truck or jeep, he said. The
Lebanese farmers tilled
fields and harvested crops
all around Israeli positions,
according to Col. Dupuy.
However, Col. Dupuy
warned, "Any army on
foreign soil eventually
wears out any welcome it
may have enjoyed, and
the tragedy in West Be-
irut indicates that time is
running short for the Is-
raelis in Lebanon.
"No matter how wise and
benevolent the occupation
policy has been, the cruel
massacre of Palestinian
Moslems by Phalangist
Christians in an area under
Israeli control has griev-
ously stained the Israelis
and their image.
"It is clear that Israel
must be ready to leave
Lebanon at the same time
as do the Syrians and the
remnants of the PLO and it
is in their best interest to
hasten such a simultaneous
withdrawal. Then they can
perhaps still capialize on
the goodwill of their earlier
occupation policy. and form
a strong bond with a free
Lebanon.

ness to us.
equitable and lasting solu-
tion of the Middle East con-
flict should be reached,' a
solution which, as he said
during the audience,
`should exclude recourse to
arms and violence of all
kinds, especially terrorism
and reprisals.' "
In his response, Wishner
stated that the AJCommit-
tee did not question "the
honorable and pacific inten-
tions of the Pope."
However, Wishner added,
"We do strongly disagree
regarding the impact of the
audience with Mr. Arafat on
popular opinion and its
widespread interpretation
as an act of legitimization
for the organization which
he heads . . . "
