THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Dr. Frieda. Ullian Dr. Frieda Silbert Ullian, one of the top Jewish com- munity leaders during her residence in Detroit in the 1930s and 1940s, died Oct. 29 at age 82. Born in Boston, Dr. Ul- lian was a Hadassah leader in Detroit who gained na- tional prominence. She was the national president of Junior Hadassah from 1923 to 1926. Dr. Ullian was the former chairman of the Massachu- setts Board of Higher Edu- cation. She held degrees from Radcliffe College and Har- vard University. Dr. Ullian held a trusteeship at Radcliffe, was president of the Radcliffe Alumna Asso- ciation and Alumnae Fund chairman. She also was president of the Massachu- setts Chapter of the Ameri- can Association of Univer- sity Women. She is survived by her husband, Hyman B.; and a son, Joseph of St. Louis, Mo. Louis H. Kepes Louis H. Kepes, founder of Coolidge Heating and Cooling, died Nov. 4 at age 85. Born in Hungary, Mr. Kepes was a board member of Cong. Bnai Moshe and a member of Masonic Lodge of the Masons and the Cres- cent Lodge. He leaves a son, Erwin; a daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Lydia) Stecker; four brothers, Joseph, Arthur of North Miami, Fla., Henry and Melvin; eight grand- children and four great- grandchildren. Rabbi Levinthal NEW YORK — Rabbi Is- rael H. Levinthal, spiritual leader of the Brooklyn Jewish Center in Crown Heights since 1919, died Oct. 31 at age 94. The brother of the late Philadelphia Judge Levint- hal, Rabbi Levinthal was the first president of the Brooklyn region of the Zionist Organization of America. From 1948 to 1962, he was visiting professor of homiletics at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
