NEXT TO THE BIRMINGHAM THEATRE 217 SOUTH WOODWARD • BIRMINGHAM 540-3337 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Rabbi Jack Goldman, administrator of the Met- ropolitan Kashruth Council of Michigan, announced that the Farmer Jack choco- late chips, marketed locally, while they are kosher cer- tified and do not contain any dairy ingredients are man- ufactured on machinery which does produce dairy chocolate chips, as well. Consequently, they cannot be regarded as pareve. In the Halakha, they fall into the category of items which are not milchig, but have been made in dairy utensils. Thus, cookies baked with these chips may not be eaten in the middle of a meat meal, but one may eat them directly after a meat meal, without the usual waiting period of six hours, according to the Ashkenazic custom. Meanwhile, the council has learned from Rabbi Benjamin Shandalov, ad- ministrator of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, that Heritage House and Log House semi-sweet chocolate chips are kosher and pareve. For inforniation about this and other kashrut mat- ters, call the council office, during business hours, 855-4324. _ The Kashrut Division of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America said that Her- shey's Semi-Sweet Choco- late Chips and Mini Chips have been reformulated to contain butterfat, which re- nders the products "dairy."
