West Bank during the past
two weeks which has
triggered reactive measures
by the Israeli authorities.

The West Bank civil ad-
ministration shut down the
Ramallah Teachers College
until further notice in re-
sponse to student demon-
strations. A military court
in Lod gave a one-year sus-
pended sentence to an East
Jerusalem Arab journalist,
Saman Khorie, for posses-
sion of two copies of a maga-
zine banned in the occupied
territories.

The magazine was Al-
Huriya published in Beirut
by the Democratic Front for
the Liberation of Palestine.
Two back issues were found
in Khorie's office when it

was raided by Israeli secu-
rity forces seven weeks ago.
The office was ordered
closed for six months by the
commander of the central
region, Gen. Uri Orr.
Friction is growing be-
tween Palestinians and
Jewish settlers on the
West Bank. The settlers
committees are holding
an emergency meeting
today to discuss "increas-
ing attacks on settlers by
local Arabs."
A group of Orthodox stu-
dents from the Gush
Emunim settlement. of Elon
Moreh announced they
would open a yeshiva at the
site of Joseph's tomb in
nearby Nablus, the largest
Arab town on the West
Bank.

President Reagan as execu-
tive director of the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Coun-
cil.
Prof. Siegel is president of
the American Jewish
Forum, an organization
that promotes conservative
political thought in the
Jewish community. He is a

Jewish Defense League
(JDL), who were unpre-
pared to abide by the rules
governing the event. What
was most disturbing, how-
ever, was that after the
event one of the speakers
received a direct threat in
front of witnesses from a
member of the JDL regard-
ing the possibility of malici-
ous damage being done to
the speaker's property. Dur-
ing the course of the week,
what was threatened took
place.
We, the undersigned,
want to call attention to
this incident not as
specific corroborating
witnesses, but out of a
general concern for de-
cency and reason.
Threats, intimidation
and violence have no
place in the Jewish com-
munity. Efforts to get at
the different perspec-
tives on any one issue can
not be deterred by
hooliganism.
We deplore the actions of
those who would stifle dis-
cussion and threaten and
assault fellow Jews. Fi-
nally, we must ask our-
selves, if Jews resort to in-
timidation and violence
against other Jews, are they
not doing then the work of
anti-Semites?
