THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Drive Benefited U.S., Schindler Says MONTREAL (JTA) — Is- rael's operation in Lebanon has given the United States "a political victory of over- whelming proportions," it was asserted by Rabbi Ale- xander Schindler, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Addressing the 100th an- niversary meeting of Tem- ple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Montreal, Schindler listed five direct results of Israel's entry into Lebanon that he said were reasons why "the United States owes Israel a tremendous debt." They were: "American influence in the Middle East is at an all- time high, and Soviet influ- ence correspondingly low; Lebanon has been given the opportunity to establish its sovereign independence and serve as a center of sta- bility in the area; the PLO, center of international ter- rorism and Soviet puppet, has been crushed; Jordan is now seeking ways to come to the peace table; priceless in- formation on captured Soviet weapons is being freely given by Israel to our country." Thanksgiving Service Planned Temple Emanu-El will join the First United Methodist Church of Royal Oak and St. Bede's Catholic Church in an ecumenical Thanksgiving service 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at St. Bede's, 18290 W. 12 Mile, Southfield. The modern building was seriously damaged in the fire but there were no casualties. Police reported that swas- tikas and anti-Semitic and anti-Arab inscriptions were daubed on adjacent walls. Some of the inscriptions read, "Death to the Jews and Arabs" and "All for- eigners out of France." Police investigators belived that a local neo-Nazi group carried out the arson attack.
