NEW YORK — The Is-
rael Ministry of Tourism, in
conjunction with the
Jerusalem Post and the Is-
rael Hotel Association, has
initiated a "Courteous Is-
raeli Contest," awarding
acts of courtesy and assis-
tance to tourists.
Letters of gratitude and
appreciation have been
submitted from far-flung
places relating the experi-
ences tourists have had
while visiting Israel. The
"Courteous Israeli Contest"
serves to recognize the spe-
cial individuals who have
befriended and helped
tourists and to emphasize
the important role they play
in attracting tourists to the
country.
An entry received from
Australia was from a handi-
capped woman who re-
quired assistance at Ben-
Gurion Airport. Although
she was not a passenber on
El Al, an El ground stewar-
dess helped her through
immigration and customs
and took her to a taxi.

Jewish breeders of Ara-
bian horses in the U.S.
Studying to be a horse
breeder is a lifetime process
involving constant re-
search, meetings with es-
tablished breeders and
keeping current on sales
and births.
In the U.S., there is a cen-
tral registry or studbook,
where pairings and their
offspring ar- recorded. Is-
rael also has a studbook
which has been accepted by
the world registry.

Ultimately, Miss Iden
and Merchav hope to effect
an exchange of horses be-
tween Israel and Egypt. Ac-
cording to Merchav, Egypt
lost some bloodlines, but
they were found to exist in
the U.S. Merchav wants to
bring these horses back to
Israel and make an ex-
change. By cooperating in
this way, the peace process
is encouraged, he added.
"One day, we will be
breeding horses in the
Sinai."

purchased by the kibutz
for breeding purposes
since Shaar HaGolan re-
ceived approval from Is-
rael's ministry of Ag-
riculture to act as an ex-
port farm.
According to Yohanan
Merchav, manager of Golan
Arabian Horsebreeding,
who was in Detroit recently,
it took much convincing of
the agriculture ministry to
prove that horsebreeding
would be a viable industry.
Merchav did a lot of re-
search, even though he has
been involved in the horse
industry all of his life.
Merchav spent 1 1/2
months in the U.S. this fall
to buy horses and to study
training and breeding sys-
tems. He visited horse
farms in Ohio, Kentucky,
Mississippi, Tennessee. and
New York. Canada also was
a stop during his stay.
According to Miss
Iden, "he is pursuing the
best pedigreed horses for
his program."
The particular interest of
the kibutz is Arabian
horses, "the horse that the
Bedouins used all these
years," Miss Iden said. The
appeal of the Arabian is
that it can be traced to the
time of King Solomon, who
Miss Iden said, was able to
transform the ancient Is-
raelites into an equestrian
people in one generation.
"We are preserving rare
bloodlines," Merchav
added. "Each line traces
back to Bedouin tribes. We
have to educate people to
what is a true Arabian
horse."
Asked what the response
by U.S. breeders is to the
Israeli-bred Arabians, Mer-
chav said it is encouraging.
"A few breeders want
to be our agents. The
serious breeders are im-
pressed." There are five

rorists who were trained by
the Palestine Liberation
Organization, left Beirut
along with the PLO units
that evacuated the city in
September.
The sources said this will
make it more difficult for
German terrorists to oper-
ate, but they 'can still count
on military help from the
PLO at bases other than in
Beirut. Interior Minister
Friedrich Zimmermann
warned that imminent
danger still exists of ter-
rorist attacks by German
groups with contacts
abroad.
Meanwhile,
Ulrich
Wegener, the first chief of
West Germany's anti-
terrorist unit, said in a
newspaper interview that
he and his men will be
forever grateful for the help
they received from Israel in
their difficult task. He said
that shortly after the mas-
sacre of the Israeli Olympics
team in Munich in 1972, he
went to Israel to participate
in an army training pro-
gram there.
