THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Mitterrand Says He'll Intercede on Behalf of Shcharansky PARIS (JTA) — French President Francois Mitter- rand has promised to inter- cede with Soviet authorities on behalf of Jewish prisoner of conscience Anatoly Shcharansky who began an indefinite hunger strike on the eve of Yom Kippur. Government sources said that Mitterrand was "de- eply moved" by the plea of Shcharansky's friends in France and also fully realized the "symbolic im- portance" of the case. The president last week met with some of Shcharansky's supporters, a group of scientists and in- tellectuals led by math- ematician Laurent Schwartz, who described in detail the condition of Shcharansky's imprison- ment, his hunger strike and his rapidly deteriorating health. Several French politi- cal parties, including the Socialists, the Gaullists and the main trade unions, have appealed to Mitterrand to inform the Soviet Union of France's concern about Shcharansky. The Catholic Church and the Protestant Federation joined France's chief rabbi in asking for the French government's intervention on the Jewish prisoner's be- half. At the same time, the Communist Party Secre- tary Gen. Georges Marchais announced that he is "fully conscious" of Shcharansky's serious condition and said that he and the party are acting on behalf of Shcharansky. It is believed that Mar- chais had personally ap- pealed to Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev, warning him that the Shcharansky case is seriously harming the Communist cause in France and in the rest of Western Europe. Meanwhile, Soviet human rights advocate Andrei Sakharov has ap- pealed to Pope John Paul II, Italian Communist Party leader Enrico Ber- linguer and Mitterrand to assist in saving Shcharansky's life. In a related development, a fast in solidarity with Shcharansky ended in New York last Friday after six days. The fast was held in front of the Soviet Mission to the United Nations by students and faculty members from Yeshiva Yeshiva Univer- sity and Stern College. Meanwhile, the SSSJ re- ported that the • Canadian Parliament passed a resolu- tion in support of Shcharansky last week. The measure was sponsored by former Foreign Minister Flora MacDonald. TEL AVIV (JTA) — Al- though still not passed by the theater and film censor- ship board, Hanoch Levin's controversial play "The Patriot" was staged at the Neve Zedek Playhouse last week — but without the ac- tors speaking the lines the censor wants deleted. But the audience knew exactly what the censor wanted to cut. The theater director stepped onto the stage at two points in the satirical cabaret-type prod- uction as the actors fell si- lent, to announce: "And here the censor deleted the following . . ." The management de- cided to stage the show in this manner after a meet- ing of the censorship board was postponed. In Jerusalem, Mayor Teddy Kollek and the Jerusalem Theater have re- jected a demand by the Jerusalem Religious Coun- cil that they halt the pre- sentation in the capital' of another controversial play — the Haifa Theater prod- uction of Yehoshua Sobol's "Soul of A Jew," depicting the last hours of Otto Weininger, a Jewish anti- Semite who committed suicide in Austria in 1903 at the age of 23. It also was learned that a five-member Dutch delegation visited the Soviet Ambassador in The Hague last week to ask for visas to visit Shcharansky for humanitarian reasons. They were turned down on grounds that convicted spies may not receive vis- itors from abroad.
