Shamir Says Arabs Bluffing When Favorable to Israel JERUSALEM (JTA) — The intensive political ac- tivity in the Arab, world which seems to adopt a pos- itive attitude toward Israel is merely a psychological tactic intended to mislead Israel, Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir said at the Knesset Wednesday. Wednesday. Replying to a motion to the agenda by Alignment Knesseter Yossi Sarid, Shamir said the purpose of this activity is to establish a Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Sarid, for his part, asked the gov- ernment for an affirmative reaction to this activity, to put to a test the Arab inten- tions. Sarid asked that the Knesset discuss the state of the peace with Egypt, but in his speech, Sarid devoted only little time to the peace with Egypt. "The peace treaty is as good as dead," he said, "and the only way to save it is to make other par- ties join the negotiations." tion agreement, the freeze of trade and culture ex- changes, and the current campaign against Israel in the state-controlled Egyp- tian press. What is the point of looking for other Arab countries to negotiate with when Egypt is not keeping the peace treaty, he asked. Shamir charged Egypt with never having fully honored the terms of the peace treaty and the promises made by its leaders to Israel. I BOUGHT OUT m Shamir charged that in recent months Egypt has been the scene for a drive of hatred and incitement against Israel, its govern- ment and the Jewish people, "which could only be corn- pared to acts by the darkest and most anti-Semitic of the regimes." He called on Egypt to quit the deviations from the peace treaty and return to the only path to a just solu- tion — the road of Camp David. Shamir counted several indications of Egypt's fail- ure to meet the terms of the peace treaty: Egypt's unim- plementation of most clauses in the normaliza- At this point Alignment Knesseter Shlomo Hillel asked, "Are you saying that as long as Egypt does not keep all the terms of the agreement, we should not look for other Arab countries as partners in peace talks, is that the government's position?" Replied Shamir: "It is not the operative position. All I am saying is that this is the logical conclusion." He said all the current Arab dip- lomatic activities have made no mention of peace with Israel. At Shamir's suggestion, the discussion of relations with Egypt was transferred to the foreign affairs and de- fense committee. =mem I. N. CHRYSLER ; ▪ LYNCH RD.
