Jewish Computer Dating
Inaugurated in Seattle

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.)

It all began when mem-
bers of the Jewish Educa-
tion Council of Seattle,
(JEC) at a meeting a little
over two years ago, proj-
ected a bleak future of fewer
and fewer Jewish children
to educate unless the grow-
ing rate of mixed marriages
among Seattle's young Jews
could be slowed down.
They decided that one
way to reach that objective
was to make it possible for
more marriageable Jewish
young men and women to
meet and get acquainted
under auspices more dig-
nified than singles bars.
They noted that in current
circumstances of Jewish
mobility and Jewish com-
munity fragmentation,
many Jewish singles are
neither members of a syna-

gogue nor involved in
Jewish community activi-
ties.
So they set about develop-
ing a Jewish Singles Corn-
puter Dating Service (JSS).
Its JEC sponsors assert that
the JSS can be credited with
at least five known mar-
riages, according to the
Jewish Transcript of Seat-
tle.

They reported that
since the JSS began func-
tioning, nearly 1,000
Jewish singles from Port-
land, Ore., to Vancouver,
B.C., have joined the
computer service.

Kay Pomerantz, JEC di-
rector, said most Jews
enrolling in the JSS are 24
years old and older, with
many in their late '20s and
early '30s. She said JSS par-
ticipants currently are
evenly divided between
men and women. She said
many singles are participat-
ing from smaller towns.
Sandy Dorr is a volunteer
who took over the job of JSS
director last November. She
said that since then, the JSS
has almost doubled its list of
names by increased public-
ity and membership expan-
sion efforts.
Ms. Dorr said that the
stigma once attached to the
idea of dating by computer
does not apply to the JSS
service. She said more Jews
with a wider range of inter-
ests and more age groups
are starting to use the serv-
ice.

Ms. Dorr said the JSS
has become an accepted
way for Jewish singles to
meet singles of the oppo-
site sex, particularly for
those who would not or-
dinarily attend events for
singles or general Jewish
community programs.
She reported she had
contacted all of the local
synagogue offices and
the Jewish Community
Center and that all of the
offices are directing in-
quiries from Jewish
single newcomers to the
JSS. She said the JSS
sends application forms
to the newcomers.

According to the Tran-
script, the JEC has a private
fund made up of contribu-
tions from several Jewish
"angels," who subsidize the
dating service and no public
funds are used. Ms. Dorr
stressed that the service is
absolutely confidential and
participants see only the
names of other persons with
whom names are ex-
changed.
Names are fed into the
computer in Los Angeles
and the service provides up
to five names and telephone
numbers each time, the
three computer runs, at
two-month intervals, for
any Jewish single, 18 years
and older, for a $20 fee.
A newsletter is sent out
with each computer run,
giving participants updated
information and informal
news about the service. Ms.
Dorr said the JSS has a
telephone system which
takes messages around the
clock.
