birthday.
Julie comes from a very
unusual background to say
the least. She is a budding
Broadway star, having a
featured role in "Oh, Cal-
cutta." She gave up her act-
ing for a brief period in
order to train properly for
the long swim which took
her 18 hours. She is now
ready to return to the stage
and the management of
"Oh, Calcutta!" would like
her to join the Toronto com-
pany. Julie would like to get
another role if possible.
A very articulate young
lady, Julie tells us that she
started swimming when she
was very little. She never
swam competitively, but
always liked to swim long
distances by herself. Her
Channel time is not fast; the-
record is seven hours, 40
minutes.
When asked as to what
her future swimming
plans were Julie advised
that, "I don't intend to try
the English Channel
again. One time is plenty.
I am considering seri-
ously to try to swim a
`double around Manhat-
tan,' swimming around
the island twice. This has

tional Foundation for
Jewish Culture is. now ac-
cepting entries for the Be-
rman Playwriting Award,
honoring the best new play
which significantly illumi-
nates an aspect of Jewish
life or experience.
The award, named in
honor of Gerard and Ella
Berman of Wayne, N.J.,
long-time patrons of con-
temporary Jewish cultural
activities, includes a $500
prize plus a staged reading
of the winning play at the
American Jewish Theatre
in New York.
Entries must be submit-
ted prior to Feb. 28, 1983
and the winner will be an-
nounced by May 1. Only
full-length, unpublished
plays in English can be con-
sidered. Only plays accom-
panied by a self-addressed,
stamped envelope will be

proposal to invite Jewish
high school students from
the Diaspora to a year's sub-
sidized study in Israel will
be decided at the 30th World
Zionist Congress in De-
cember.
Moshe Krkne, head of the
department of Torah cul-
ture in the Diaspora, noted
at a Zionist Executive meet-
ing that only 300,000
Jewish pupils in the U.S.
now receive any type of
Jewish education.
