A graduate of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Dodson holda degrees as well from Yale and UCLA. He has been a psychologist in private practice for more than 20 years. The Orchards was for- mally dedicated on Sept. 9, 1962. From the beginning, the operation of the resi- dence and the development of subsequent services has been the result of the partnership of volunteers and professionals. Through this partner- ship, the Orchards has grown from one .resi- dence housing eight emo- tionally troubled boys to eight. district homes and programs serving chil- dren, their families, the general community and students and profession- als in the field of child de- velopment. Currently, three resi- dences, under the director- ship of Bruce Binstock, pro- vide the security of a home setting to children in therapy. These are the Livonia Residence, the Southfield Residence and soon-to-be opened Adoles- cent Girls Residence, the only home for troubled girls in Oakland County. Gerald Levin is executive director of the Orchards Children's Service. . Another Orchards pro- gram is the Ted Schwartz Day Camp established in 1978 by Sylvia Schwartz in memory of her husband. The camp, located on the grounds of the Livonia Re- sidence, serves children ages 3-6 whose physical or behavorial problems make attendance at a regular day camp impossible. Donna 01 lerman is the camp director. Children's needs are also met through the Community Program in- augurated in 1969 to serve youngsters iden- tified by kindergarten or first grade teachers as having potentially seri- ous emotional problems. Suzanne Franklin serves as program coordinator. Two recent services are the Aaron and Helen L. DeRoy Center of consulta- tion and training and the parent therapist programs. 549-2323 Friday, November 5, 1982 35 The true test of civiliza- tion is, not the census, nor the size of the cities, nor the crops — no, but the kind of man the country turns out. —Emerson •_.••••••_ *0. * **".."
