HOLLYWOOD — Ab-
raham Polonsky, co-author
of the screenplay of 20th
Century-Fox's picture,
"Monsignor," from the
novel by Jack Alain Leger
deals with an era and back-
ground he had first studied
when stationed in Europe
under the auspices of the
O.S.S. during World War II.
The drama spans three
decades of political up-
heaval in the Vatican and
spiritual turmoil for a
young priest (Christopher
Reeve) who will ultimately
control the Vatican's finan-
cial destiny.
Polansky, who became a
writer and screen director
seemingly by chance,
started his career as an at-
torney with a Manhattan
law firm. Born in New York
in 1910, he attended City
College and earned his law
degree at Columbia Univer-
sity. One of his clients,
radio's Gertrude Berg (star
of"The Goldbergs"), came to
his office for technical ad-
vice and he dictated a scene
to his secretary which was
used on the show. He quit
the law firm and became a
full-time writer.
After being discharged
from the service, he wrote

anti-Nazi picture, "Golden

rich) in 1947, followed by
the John Garfield films,
"Body and Soul," and "Force
of Evil," the latter of which
he also directed. After a
year in the south of France
writing his first novel, "The
World Above," he returned
to Hollywood to complete
the screenplay to "I Can Get
It For You Wholesale."
In 1951 he was called to
testify before the House
Un-American Activities
Committee. Invoking the
Fifth Amendment, he found
his name on the "Hollywood
Blacklist" and for 18 years
was able to work in motion
pictures and for television
only under a pseudonym.
Finally, in 1968, his name
reappeared on the main
title of the police drama
"Madigan," as a screen
writer. Two years later he
returned to directing, in
addition to writing, with the
western, "Tell Them Willie
Boy Was Here," starring
Robert Redford.

UN Palestine
Parley to Debate
Jerusalem Status

NEW YQRK — The In-
ternational Conference on
the Question of Palestine, to
be convened next year by
the United Nations in Paris,
will examine "the status of
Jerusalem," according to
the World Jewish Congress.
The UN General Assem-
bly's Palestinian Rights
Committee has approved a
14-point agenda for the con-
ference which is to be held
from Aug. 16-27. The Pales-
tinian Rights Committee,
which serves as the confer-
ence's preparatory body, is
comprised almost entirely
of states having no diploma-
tic relations with Israel and
has reportedly been de-
nounced by Israeli repre-
sentatives as a tool of the

RICHARD DREYFUSS

has completed his assign-
ment on "The Buddy Sys-
tem," a contemporary
romantic comedy in which
Susan Sarandon, Nancy
Allen and Jean Stapleton
appear as his female co-
stars. The Academy Award
winning actor portrays a
dreamer who tries to find
himself.
In the meantime,
Dreyfuss has signed a deal
with Columbia Pictures to
make four motion pictures
under his own banner — in
conjunction with Andrew
Fogelson. The first of the
four pictures, which also
will star Dreyfuss, is geared
for a spring 1983 starting
date.
While feature filths will
be the priority, Dreyfuss
and Fogelson are also plan-
ning to develop products for
both network and cable
television. This non-
exclusive deal will enable
Dreyfuss to fulfill indepen-
dents commitments such as
the picture contemplated
for Israeli producer Arnon
Milchan, co-authored by
Dreyfuss and set in New
York.
