A spokesman said there are currently about 800 Jews on the force, repre- senting about three percent, far below the Jewish prop- ortion of New York City's total population. He said the department hopes to get 40,000 applicants for the upcoming examination and that the Jewish organiza- tions "would like to see 1,000 Jewish applicants but we have doubts that number will register."
