national Security in Wash-
ington, in a letter published
in the Washington Post,
emphasized that Israel still
needs aid from the U.S. He
wrote:
"Allusions have been
made to a presumed
dichotomy between contin-
ued U.S. military aid for Is-
rael and the Jewish state's
new -military prowess.
Longstanding critics of Is-
rael put their argument
succinctly: Israel no longer
requires the same level of
U.S. military assistance.

"Having analyzed the
geopolitics of the Middle
East under three admirtis-
trations including the pre-
sent, I would argue that the
move in Congress to in-
crease aid to Isarel is right
on target.
"The reasons are sim-
ple. Now more than ever
before, the Israeli De-
fense Force h as, as its
principal task, to deter
Soviet military adven-
turism in the region. To
achieve such deterrence,
Israel's military technol-
ogy must remain at the
sharp edge of conven-
tional power.
"Israel has advanced to
the point where its own
technology builds upon and
in some respects has sur-
passed our own achieve-
ments. This qualitative ad-
vantage must be main-
tained through expanded
U.S.-Israeli cooperation on
military technology. The
U.S. .assistance package , is
the hard steel necessary for
Israel's edge.
"U.S. military assistance
has another important role
to play in strengthening the
credibility of Israeli deterr-
ence to Soviet adventurism.
As seen by friend and foe
alike, such assistance is the
litmus fest of America's
credible commitment to Is-
rael. Any weakening of that
test would send the wrong

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
public opinion poll taken in
mid-Obtober showed that
Likud has gained slightly in
popularity and the Labor
Party correspondingly de-
clined. But a strong centrist
third party would be a seri-
ous threat to the Likud gov-
ernment, according to the
survey conducted by Dr.
Mina Zemach for Monitin
magazine.
If elections were held
now, Likud would win 59
Knesset seats and Labor 40
seats, the poll showed.
But a new centrist party
woul dwin 14 seats if it in-
cluded on its list former De-
fense Minister Ezer Weiz-
man, and six seats without
Weizman: Most of those
gains would be at the ex-
pense of the Likud-led coali-
tion, political observers say.
signal to Moscow and Arab
capitals alike.
"Today, as never before,
Soviet militarists are trou-
bled by the need to calculate
Israeli military power into
any unseemly move they
might wish to make south of
the Caucasus. It behooves
American military plan-
ners to keep that calcula-
tion real.
"The security of the
Middle East requires
steadfastness in our as-
sistance to Israel."
I drink the wine of aspira-
tion and the drug of illusion.
Thus I am never dull.
