British Author's Play 'Good' Whitewashes the Holocaust

late C. P. Taylor, a
Britisher, tries to tell us
how "good" Germans were
subtly, almost uncon-
sciously, seduced into th-e
horrible role of Nazi pup-
pets in the Royal Shakes-
peare Company's presenta-
tion of his play, "Good," now
at the Booth Theater.
The production, on a bare
stage except for a piano,
some chairs, and an over-
abundance of lighting; tries
to reveal the encroaching
villainy of Hitlerism upon a
normally "good" German.

In the play, Halder, an
humanities professor, leads
a normal life, which means
he is harassed by a bedrid-
den, demanding, mother; a
sluttish wife who has abdi-
cated her domestic respon-
sibilities; a beautiful,
nubile student who becomes
his mistress; a close friend,
a Jewish psychiatrist (note
the British author-
intellectual once again
stereotyping the Jew) who
pleads for help to escape the
inevitable slaughter by the
Nazis; and the Nazi func-
tionaries who finally suc-
ceed in co-opting Halder.

the dramatic power of a
tragic hero.
"Good" fails to illuminate
the eternal puzzle of the re-
currence of evil. Perhaps he
succeeds in demonstrating
how little men are sucked in
and succumb to mobism, but
Taylor fails to tell or show
why.
