Amnesty Issues 1982 Report

CHICAGO — Amnesty
International has issued its
1982 report, surveying
political imprisonment, tor-
ture and executions in 121
countries during 1981.
The organization said its
major concern was political
killings by governments,
citing incidents in Syria,
Iraq and Latin American
countries.

Israeli Workshop
for NCJW
Teaching Method

NEW YORK — Israeli
educators and sociologists
have found a way to help
disadvantaged pre-
schoolers achieve eventual
success in school.
An international work-
shop on the Home Instruc-
tion Program for Preschool
Youngsters will convene
Dec. 6-20 in Haifa and
Jerusalem. The program
was developed by the Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women's (NCJW) Research
Institute for Innovative
Education.
The program currently
reaches some 16,000
families in more than 100
communities throughout
Israel. It provides one-to-
one training of mothers
who, in turn, teach their
four-six year olds basic lan-
guage and other skills at
home, using specially de-
signed lesson packets and
books.

WASHINGTON — Judy
Altenberg, of Englewood,
Colo.. has been elected na-
tional president of BBG, the
girl's component of the Bnai
Brith Youth Organization
(BBYO).
Adam Petrovsky, of
Phoenix, has-been elected
president of AZA, the boys'
component of BBYO.

was devoted mainly to

trative detention in the
administered territories.
Amnesty International'
adopted no one as a political
prisoner in the U.S., but
cited several cases in which
prisoners said they were
convicted of criminal
charges only because of
their political beliefs. The
organization also worked
against capital punishment
in the U.S. and discussed
the situation of illegal im-
migrants.
