BEIRUT (ZINS) — Gen.
Ben-Gal Janosh, comman-
der of the Israeli forces in
Lebanon, recently told
Haaretz that the Israel De-
fense Forces did not defeat
the Syrians during the re-
cent battles.
Despite the Syrian losses
of hundreds of tanks of 80
aircraft, the general said
the Syrians acquitted them-
selves well.

He said the Syrians
fought well, did not panic,
and retreated in orderly
fashion to predetermined
positions.

NY Law Firm Guilty of Bias Against Orthodox Job Seeker

By BEN GALLOB

(Copyrighgt 1982, JTA, Inc.)

One of the nation's
largest law firms, Shear-
man and Sterling of New
York, was recently found by
the state division of human
rights to have unlawfully
discriminated against an
Orthodox Jewish woman in
denying her a job because
she was a Sabbath observer.
Howard Zuckerman,
president of the National
Jewish Commission on Law
and Public Affairs
(COLPA), which repre-
sented the Brooklyn.
woman, whose name was
withheld, said the law firm
decidednot to appeal the de-
cision.
The ruling by the state
agency resulted from the
plaintiff's complaint that
she was refused a job as a
secretary because she would
have had to leave early on
Fridays during the winter
months to be home before
sundown.
According to the deci-
sion, the woman applied
to the firm in October,
1977, was interviewed by
the personnel manager
and tested for typing and
dictation skills. She
passed the tests and was
sent to the firm's
secretarial manager for
an interview. She was
told the firm had an operi
position in its litigation
department and that
secretaries usually
worked Monday through
Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to
5:30 p.m. She did not at
that time, or previously,
inform the personnel di-
rector that she needed to
leave before 5:30 p.m. on
winter Fridays.
The woman, who did not

suffer any loss of wages within her rights in with-
since she immediately got a holding the information
job with another firm, was about her Sabbath time-off
awarded $500 in compen- needs, noting that earlier
satory damages by the this year, a major health
court. and hospital insurer in New
Zuckerman pointed out York had revised a job ap-
that the woman was fully plication form to omit a

general declaration of the
applicant's availability for
work according to the em-
ployer's requirements,
which forced a Sabbath-
observant applicant either
to lie or to disclose Sabbath
observer status.

HAIFA (JNI) — While
airborne tourism to Israel
has plummeted since the
start of operation Peace for

booming, continuing to
bring tens of thousands of
visitors to Israel this year.
Since June, not one of 25
cruise ships, which usually
spend one or two days in Is-
rael on a Mediterranean
tour, has canceled its call.
