The name of the restaurant is the Quilted Giraffe. It is located at 995 2nd Ave. in New York City. The owners are Barry and Sue Wine (he's the son of Irving and Lil Wine of Barry's Surplus here) and they are neat people whose warmth and friendliness makes dining in what might otherwise be a pretentious French res- taurant atmosphere com- fortable. This friendly feel- ing carries over to service personnel who are low key, conscientious and ex- tremely courteous, all of which makes the experience expensive but fun. "The Quilted Giraffe is an American-run, Nouvelle Cuisine restaurant with beautiful table settings and a magnificent wine list. That list is presented in high-tech style on a com- puter printout; the corn- puterization allows the Wines to update inventory on a daily basis. "The plate presentation at the Quilted Giraffe is breathtaking, while the menu selection is varied and bold in its uniqueness. I started with ravioli stuffed with finely chopped chan- terelles and garnished abundantly with succulent whole wild mushrooms. The sauce was light butter and wine, very understated so as to let the mushroom flavor through loud and clear.
