THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Chamber Unit Opens Season Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST AL. SAM AND LILI FEN- TON were invited to what was supposedly a surprise birthday party for daughter-in-law Sheila .. and got the shock of their lives . . . The affair turned out to be a surprise shindig celebrating the Fentons' 40th wedding anniversary . . . which comes out on Sheila's birthday. Back in 1942, they were married by Rabbi Leon Fram at Sammy and Marge Sofferin's Wonder Bar on Washington Blvd. . . . Sam, in uniform, was a cadet on furlough from Hondo, Texas, learning to become a navigator. Rabbi Pram, now 86 years old, remarried them at the party . . . with their four sons, Roger (Marcia), Mark (Sheila), Randall (Kathy) and George (Barbara) Fen- ton holding the hupa . . . as only daughter, Iris Fenton, looked on . . . and their four granddaughters went for the bouquet . . . Mock wed- ding for Sam and Lili was at home of Robert and Marcia. Sheila didn't miss out on her birthday . . . getting a beautiful raccoon coat from hubby Mark. "You've got a lot of nerve coming in here, Ginsberg!" said the barten- der. "Get out quick — before something happens to you!" Reluctantly, Sammy took his -advice and left . . . A minute after, an Allied plane flew over the saloon and dropped a bomb on it, leaving the bar in a sham- bles . . . The bartender was crawling out from the debris when Sammy entered .. . "Do I get the whiskey and soda," asked Sammy threat- ingly, "or do I have to do it all over again?!" LOOKING BACK .. On Columns Of Yes- teryears: Aug. 18, 1967 ... "Dr. Abe Pearlman, dental doc with the smile all his patients would like to have, took a long stare back after moving his office recently from Puritan near Liver- nois to Greenfield and Outer Drive. "Abe always has a cutie or two to tell us . . . like the young lady who had so many cavities in her mouth she talked like an echo .. . or the one who had so much bridgework in her mouth her boyfriend had to pay a toll every time he kissed her . . . Abe's big office move comes after 27 years at the same place." Oct. 20, 1968 . . . "Dr. Gerald Weingarden's pa- tient was wheeled back to his ward after an operation and placed back in bed .. . An hour or so later he awakened, and the first thing he noticed when he opened his eyes was that the window shade had been drawn:. "He asked the resident doctor why the light was shut out from his room .. . `We didn't do it to keep the light out,' the doctor said. 'I had the shades pulled down because there is a fire across the street. I didn't want you to wake up and think the operation hadn't been a suc- cess.'
