Anti-Semitic Posters Used in California Gun Campaign

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The appearance in the Los
Angeles area of a series of
six wall posters linking a
proposed California hand-
gun registration measure to
Nazi atrocities committed
against Jews in the
Holocaust may be the work
of a group with ties to the
extremist rightwing and
virulently anti-Semitic
Liberty Lobby organization,
according to an official of
the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith in Los
Angeles.
The posters have ap-
peared on traffic control

boxes on main boulevards in
Westminster and Hun-
tington Beach and last week
outside the headquarters of
Californians Against Street
Crime. The group is cam-
paiging for passage of Pro-
position 15, which would
require state residents to
register handguns and re-
strict future sales in the
state.
The black-and-white
posters show photographs of
Nazi storm troopers,
stacked bodies of victims
killed in the concentration
camps and Nazi execution
victims.

One poster contains a
photograph of a Nazi
officer with a pistol to the
head of an elderly man
who is sitting on the edge
of a mass grave filled
with corpses. The poster
declares in bold letters,
"Gun Registration
Equals Mass Extermina-
tion."
Another pictures Nazi
troops and the phrase,
"First Register Their Guns,
Then Register the Jews."

ing to weigh the losses and
gains of a very dramatic
summer. We have to ask:
have we really eliminated
the PLO? Was it worth the
loss of nearly 400 of our
young men to move the PLO
from Beirut to Damascus?"
This statement was made
'here by Israel's former
Foreign Minister Abba
Eban in an address to
2,500 people attending the
opening session of the Bnai
Brith International conven-
tion last week. Eban, now a
Labor Party member of the
Knesset, said there is a di-
vision of opinion in Israel
about issues arising from
the war in Lebanon.
"Diaspora Jews should
take pride in the fact that
Israel is a pluralist democ-
racy and they (Diaspora
Jewry) need not be afraid of
stating their own views on
issues. Diaspora Jews
should not be inhibited."
Eban said the dissent
among Jews is "about really
two wars: the war of the
Galilee and the war of Be-
irut. Each stands in its own
pattern of justification."
Eban called the attempts
to exclude Israel from
United Nations agencies
"monstrous" and "showing
complete contempt for the
UN Charter."
Eban also assailed the
news media for applying
"double values" in discuss-
ing Israel, stating that he
would have more respect for
press if it had shown equal
interest in terrorism and
killings in other parts of the
world.
