HOLLYWOOD — "Circle
of Deceit" is a filmic docu-
ment dealing with the di-
vided city of Beirut 15
months before the Israeli
army stopped the anarchy
in the capital of Lebanoh.
Produced and directed by
Volker .Schlondorff, Ger-
man director of the 1981
foreign-language Academy
Award winning picture,
"The Tin Drum," his cur-
rent offering — though
made with the assistance of
the PLO — proves that the
Israeli armed forces deserve
solid credit for the unifica-
tion of the country.
Schlondorff"s camera
catches -the terror along the
green line of the multi-
partitioned city, split up
like a jigsaw puzzle, in a
vision of apocalyptic inten-
sity. Though the dramatic
scenes were staged, the
story is factual and the
background of death and
destruction thoroughly au-
thentic, with ransacked
hotels, burned-out homes.
and _ charred corpses
everywhere.
The Lebanese army and
police, powerless and seem-
ingly disinterested, left the
field to terrorists of every
shade; Yasir Arafat's high
command had become the
government Within the
government; there - are
armed units of extremist
George Habash, the Syrian
regulars, Phalangists, lef-
tist Moslem militia; mer-
cenaries from a number of
Communist countries in-
cluding East Germany,
Czechoslovakia, Poland and
Cuba.
The movie shows masked
gunmen racing through the
street in jeeps and armored
trucks; bombing raids, kid-
nappings, torture and mass
executions. Schlondorff s
hero, a German journalist,
portrayed by Bruno Ganz, is
appalled by the wanton
cruelty and so are his
fellow-correspondents who
seemingly have forgotten
the atrocities of the Nazis.
The motivations of the
urban terrorists fighting
each other for supremacy
can only be explained by
-greed and lust for physical
power.

GIORA RUBIN, head of
Israel Video Magazine, was
in Hollywood to discuss his
independent venture to pre-
sent the Holy Land as it is
seen by Israelis. The project
is the brainchild of Rubin,
the producer, and David
Urbach its director. After
spending some time abroad,
they discovered that Israel,
as reported in the foreign
press, was often a faint
shadow of the colorful
reality they knew it to be.
What's more, they came to
the conclusion that official
information sources were
neglecting the full, dynamic
range of Israeli life.
Each issue of the "maga-
zine," on color video cas-
settes, presents a composite
of timely, in-depth items on
Israeli life, society, culture,
