THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, October 22, 1982 7 The problem is that we've heard all this before. The ci er is that we're hearing it all again. Isolation is nothing new to Jews. Jews stood alone against the Egyptians and the Assyrians. Jews stood alone against the Romans at Masada. Jews were isolated in Spain. Jews. were alone in the Russian Pale. And in the ghettos of Europe. And during the Russian pogroms. And during the Nazi terror. Then Israel was born. And we were not alone. We were a united people. We had a homeland. Yet Israel found itself isolated again. Its neighbors did not want it there. They swore "to drive the Jews into the sea." Hardly the warmest of welcomes. The Israelis were alone again in 1948. - And in 1956. And in 1967. • And in 1973. And in 1982. Today, Israel stands alone in the world. It is isolated by the politics of oil. By petrodollars. By the changing foreign policies of the world's nations. By the news media. American Jews cannot allow Israel to remain isolated. We cannot turn our backs on Israel as the rest of the world has done. We have a responsibility. We must protect our homeland. Israel has survived against its enemies its entire existence. It must survive today. President Reagan waits to see if the American Jews will respond. Israel waits to see if the American Jews will respond. We cannot let them down. We have sworn never to forget. We must not allow the world to forget either. We must unite. We will endure. AJC and IEF Solidarity Sunday October 24, 1982 These are extremely difficult times for Israel.
