Former Detroiter Ben
Roth, a founder of the
Jewish community in
Palma de Mallorca, an is-
land province of Spain, is
visiting his family in De-
troit through next week,
staying with his brother-
in-law and sister, Mr. and
Mrs. Jack (FriecW Drapkin.
Roth writes a column for
the English-language
Majorca Daily Bulletin.
Roth left Detroit 23 years
ago. He lived in Mexico and
Israel before moving to
Majorca. His Spanish-born
wife came to the U.S. for the
birth of their daughter and
the couple became ac-
quainted with Rabbi Leon
Fram of Temple Israel.
When Fram indicated
that he would like to visit
the Roths in 1966, while
on his way to Europe for
a World Jewish Congress
meeting, Roth made ar-
rangements with the
Spanish authorities for a
public Jewish service.
It was the first public
service allowed on Majorca
since the beginning of the
Spanish Inquisition 500
years before. Until that
time, Roth was involved in
holding private Jewish
services in homes on the is-
land.
Roth said that in 1966 the
Spanish government began
allowing non-Catholic reli-
gious services and the
