Time magazine reportedly
rejected an article commis-
sioned recently by its
Jerusalem bureau chief
from Prof. Ephraim E. Ur-
bach, president of the Israel
Academy of Sciences and
Humanities.
Although Time's New
York editors gave no reason
for the rejection, it is be-
lieved that they did not ex-
pect an objective article on
the Israeli reaction to the

named president of Bran-
deis University.
Dr. Handler, currently
president of the University
of New hampshire, was
elected earlier this month
by the Brandeis Board of
Trustees. She will succeed
Marver H. Bernstein, who
plans to resign in June.
Dr. Handler was born in
Hungary in 1933 and came
to the U.S. with her family
in 1940. She was educated
at Hunter College in New

of Ancient Kalonymus Codex

NEW YORK — The
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations will issue a
limited edition of 300 full-
size, full-color facsimile
copies of the Kalonymus
Codex, an illuminated Bible
manuscript in Hebrew and
Aramaic dating from 1238.
Proceeds from the pub-
lishing venture will benefit
the Polish Judaica project of
the UAHC, under which
long-lost artifacts and
works of art, history, law

and philosophy produced by
the rich civilization of
Polish Jewry will be rescued
and restored to the world
Jewish community.
The facsimile copies of the
Codex will be printed in the
Netherlands in eight colors
and blocked-gold foil on
handmade vellum and
handsewn and handbound
in ,goatskin leather. They
will cost $5,000 each and
will be available next Sep-
tember.

AJC Lauds Papal Statement

NEW YORK — The
president and executive di-
rector of the American
Jewish Congress have
commended Pope John Paul
II for his "forthright denun-
ciation" of anti-Semitism
foilowing the terrorist at-
tack on a Rome Synagogue
earlier this month during
which a two-year-old
Jewish child was killed.
Howard M. Squadron,
president, and Henry Sieg-
man, executive director, of

the organization issued the
following statement:
"We commend Pope John
Paul II for his forthright de-
nunciation of resurgent
anti-Semitism in Italy, and
of the latest atrocity, an
outrageous attack on the
Synagogue in Rollie by PLO
terrorists. The Pope's lin-
kage of these terrorist acts
to the Holocaust carries
with it a message and a
warning of the greatest
urgency for the world."

time in six months last
week as followers of the
Habad movement
slaughtered cows, sheep
and chickens for distribu-
tion in Beirut.
