'COMMITTEE IN
FORMATION

JDC IN LEBANON: Jews in the United States are
displaying special interest in providing relief through the
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to needy
Arabs in Lebanon.
The JDC is now receiving special contributions for its
relief programs in Lebanon which started with a commit-
ment of $100,000 from its budget in the middle of June. The
contributions — in cash and merchandise — now have
reached about $1 million. The donations are distributed by
JDC among Christian and Moslem Arabs through local
Lebanese agencies and government departments.
JDC was among the first international voluntary relief
agencies to enter Lebanon with relief. It provided the home-
less with mattresses, thousands of woolen blankets, cook-
ing and eating utensils and even with brooms and plastic
garbage bags as the first steps to bringing them back to
normal life. It also enabled the city of Tyre to lease bulldoz-
ers and heavy trucks to remove debris — a step necessary
for restoring the water and sewage systems-in the city.
It lost no time in bringing truckloads of relief supplies,
which included 17 donated tons of powdered milk and
cream for infants, several tons of anti-biotic syrup,
medicine and vitamins for children, baby food and baby
clothes, and even baby bottles for infants.
Its relief operations for children included an emer-
gency campaign to innoculate all children in southern
Lebanon against polio when three polio cases were dis-
covered there. The program covered 60,000 children and
was concluded in August with the cooperation of the
Lebanese Red Cross and the United Nations relief organ-
izations. JDC provided the funds for purchase of supplies,
for renting Minibuses to reach remote villages, and for
hiring additional public health personnel. Anti-polio
serum was provided by the ministries of health of Lebanon
and Israel.
JDC also purchased thousands of packets of oral re-
hydration solution for shipment to southern Lebanon in
early August. These were urgently required for the treat-
ment of dysentery — the number-one killer of young chil-
dren. It funded the construction of a pre-fabricated building
on the grounds of the government hospital in Sidon to serve
as a treatment center for malnourished children. It also
purchased supplies for the eight outpatient clinics and hos-
pitals in southern Lebanon operated by the Lebanese gov-
ernment, so that these can quickly resume normal opera-
tions.
JDC WINTER PLANS: The JDC is now beginning to
stockpile heating stoves, blankets, warm clothing and
equipment in anticipation that the needs of the suffering
Lebanese families will even be greater when the cold
winter days start.
Some of the equipment is being purchased by JDC and
some is being donated by groups and individuals. Ralph
Goldman, JDC executive vice president, is now drawing
the attention of donors for JDC programs in Lebanon that
they should send their checks to "MC-Lebanon" P.O. Box
2287, New York, N.Y. 10163, or through the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation. Corporations and individuals interested in
donating goods are advised to write directly to the JDC
headquarters, describing the nature of the material and the
quantities being offered. The JDC headquarters is located
at 60 E. 42nd St., New York, N.Y. 10017.
Preparing for long-term rehabilitation, JDC has now
undertaken assessments of needs and costs. Assessment of
damage to private homes has been undertaken in the cities
of Tyre, Sidon and Damour and has formed the basis for
part of the JDC grant application to the United States
Agency for International Development.
