IDF Doctor Will Speak at Bonds Physicians Event

Dr. Michael Wiener, a di-,
visional physician in the Is-
rael Defense Forces during
the "Peace for the Galilee"
operation, will speak at the
Israel Bonds Medical Physi-
cians Division Tribute
Dinner honoring Dr. Ab-
raham Becker.
The event will be held
Wednesday at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, with cocktails
at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7.
Dr. Becker will be pre-
sented with Israel's
Maimonides Award. Dinner
chairman is Dr. William M.
Leuchter; Medical Physi-
cians Division chairman is
Dr. Hershel Sandberg.
Dr. Wiener, who holds
the rank of colonel, was
born in Theresienstadt in
Czechoslovakia in 1944.
He was brougbt to Israel
at the age of two and
spent his childhood in
Haifa.
He studied mathematics
in Jerusalem at the Hebrew
University and received his
medical degree from Hadas-
sah Medical School. He
served a rotating internship
at the Rambam Medical
Center in Haifa and later

chief physician in the parat-
and infantry corps.

Balalaika Group
Gives Concert

The Balalaika Orchestra
of Detroit will appear at Or-
chestra Hall Saturday at
8:30 p.m.
The orchestra is the old-
est continually active
balalaika ensemble in
America, dating back to
1926. Originally formed by
Russian immigrants who
were interested in the
preservation of Slavic folk
music and culture in their
new homeland, the or-
chestra is one of the few au-
thentic balalaika
ensembles outside the
Soviet Union.

senior resident in the Cen-
ter's Internal Medical De-
partment. He is certified by
the Israeli Board of Internal
Medicine.
During the Yom Kippur
War, Dr. Wiener served as
physician for the famed Go-
lani Brigade of the Israel
Defense Forces. He has
served as a deputy physi-
cian for the army's North-
ern Command and was in
charge of medical aid for
civilians in southern Leba-
non in 1978.

Israel Seeks $3 Billion Aid

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel has submitted an aid
request to the U.S. govern-
ment for the coming fiscal
year which totals $3 billion.
The request was pre-
sented in Jerusalem by Fi-
nance Minister Yoram
Aridor to U.S. Ambassador
Samuel Lewis, and a simul-
taneous submission was
made in Washington.
The request is identical to
that put forward last year,
when the figure eventually
approved was $2.2 billion.
Proposals in Washington to
increase that figure by an-
other $425 million have
been shelved recently due to
the Lebanon war.
The Israeli request
breaks down into $1.25
million in civilian aid,
which Israel seeks as an
outright grant, and $1.75

billion in military aid,
which Israel seeks half in
grant form and half in
loan form.
In explanatory material
accompanying the aid re-
quest, Israel says its civi-
lian balance of payments
deficit is likely to widen by
half a billion dollars in the
coming fiscal year. (But this
will be set off, it is hoped, by
a decrease in military im-
ports.)
Israel says it plans to
keep unemployment down
to below five percent of the
labor force, and, while infla-
tion will top 130 percent in
the coming year, it will
hopefully decline steadily
thereafter.
