French, Jewish, American, International Cuisine Woman Rabbi Critiques Article Editor, The Jewish News: I wish to respond to the article by Aviva Cantor, entitled "Women's Equality in Judaism" (Sept. 17, 1982), particularly with re- gard to women in the Re- form rabbinate. Of the 61 women who have been ordained in the past 10 years, 49 of us are graduates of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish In- stitute of Religion. Ms. Can- tor writes that "there is still considerable resistance to hiring women except as assistant rabbis or educators, and the Reform movement has a task force dealing with the problem." This is inaccurate and mis- leading, for several reasons: Ms. Cantor conveys the assumption and value judgment that there is something wrong with the positions "assistant rabbi" and "educator." She fails to mention that the great majority of the women were ordained within the last four years, and that most of our male classmates occupy similar entry-level posi- tions. There are now 10 women (including Rabbi Sally Priesand) who are the "solo" rabbis of their own congre- gations. All the women who have sought "solo" pulpits have found them. The Task Force on Women in the Rabbinate of the Central Conference of American Rabbis was created to help all of us, congregations and rabbis alike, adjust to a new situa- tion (not necessarily a "problem") — the entry of women into a previously all-male profession. The fact that the Task Force exists (and I proudly serve as one of its members) indicates an effort on the part of the Reform move- ment to insure the equal treatment of all the rabbis it ordains. The "considerable resis- tance" to which the article refers may have existed several years ago, but re- cent placement successes argue to the contrary. Ms. Cantor's information is biased and out of date. coupon I I Class on Cults • •••••• • ••• • •• • NEW YORK (JTA) — The Akron Jewish Commu- nity High School, a bene- ficiary of the Akron Jewish Community Federation, re- cently offered stuents and parents five one-hour pre- sentations on cults. 0 I for I c la I ON ANY OMELETTE 1 0 Buy one of our 50 varieties of omelettes and get a — second omelette of equal or lesser value FREE.
