Or- linsky captivated an audi- ence of 350 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek for two hours Tuesday evening as he discussed "The Concept of the Holy Land in the Bible and Judea and Samaria vs. the West Bank." In a humor-filled give- and-take with his audience, Dr. Orlinslu emphasized that in the Hebrew Scrip- tures, God gave the Land of Israel to the individual Pat- riarchs — Abraham, Isaac and Jacob — and their de- scendants, and after them to the nation of Israel as a whole. Dr. Orlinsky had mem- bers of the audience read selected translated pas- sages from the Bible and explained the Hebrew terms showing that God made a legal contract with the Patriarchs. "Israel's obligation was complete devotion to God alone and to no Other," Dr. Orlinsky said. "There must also be jus-. tice for their fellow Is- raelites. "God's obligation was to protect, favor and prosper them against every other nation in the world. God was a national god, not an international one, but also a universal one." Dr. Orlinsky said invad- ers came because Israel did not fully uphold its end of the bargain and was punished for its sins. "The invaders mean nothing. They are the tools of God," he said. "The Biblical view is that the whole world is a stage, with just two roles: God and Israel. The other nations 'have walk-on roles." Dr. Orlinsky said the most important point or inducement for Israel in the contract was the Land. "The attraction is not the worship of God or gaining social justice. The attraction is the Land. The Land is the contract." He added that he has been preparing a monograph on this theme and has been checking the Bible for two years and found nothing to re- fute this. He said individuals within the nation of Israel might break this covenant with God, but that the na- tion as a whole could not. He scornfully denounced a standard Christian refer- ence on the Bible, compiled by Prof. Anderson of Prince- ton Theological Seminary and used widely by Chris- tian scholars. Anderson's text refers to Seattle Monitor SEATTLE (JTA) — A project to monitor Seattle public schools for indica- tions of religious influence has been started by the Seattle Jewish Federation and the 'American Civil Liberties Union of Wash- ington state. the Land as a gift from God. Dr. Orlinsky quoted numerous passages in the Bible which refer to the covenant in real estate terms. "It was not a gift," Dr. Orlinsky stated. "It can be taken away from you by military or political power. But not le- gally!: Dr. Orlinsky said An- derson succumbed to anti-Zionism or anti- Semitic thinking for this section of his book, which in no way is backed by the Bible. "Unfortu- nately," he said, "this is the norm of Christian scholarly opinion about the Land." • Dr. Orlinsky quoted New Testament references to Judea and Samaria, and in particular in the Book of Acts. At this point, he said, Jesus had already been re- ssurected and was therefore considered a deity. Jesus tells his disciples to go through Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and then the world. But Christian scholars never refer to these pas- sages, Dr. Orlinsky said, be- cause they give a Zionist in- terpretation which is not popular. Dr. Orlinsky answered several lively questions from the audience, but re- fused to become involved in a discussion of modern Is- rael's claims to ancient Judea and Samaria. He said the writers of the Bible gave various descriptions of the dimensions of the land (i.e. "from Dan to Beersheva") and the dimensions varied from period to period. Dr. Orlinsky's lecture was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs.' Walter Field as the opening of the 16th annual series of events sponsored by the Shaarey Zedek Cul- tural Commission. ciC6vif p„(),„GRApi.
