Women's Division launches
its annual Phonogift tele-
phone appeal Sunday-
Tuesday.
Under the direction of
chairman Sharon Hart, the
Phonogift committee has
completed plans for the
three days of telephone sol-
icitation that will reach
6,000 women. A bank of
phones at United Hebrew
Schools will be manned by
hundreds of volunteers.
During Phonogift, volun-
teers will be briefed on sol-
icitation techniques and
pertinent facts prior to their
shifts. A special training
session for briefers was held
last month with division
briefing chairman Linda
Lee. Phonogift briefing
chairmen are Pam Opperer
and Jessie Stern.
Representatives of the
Campaign's beneficiary
agencies also will speak
to volunteers during the
appeal. Included will be
the executive directors of
Jewish Federation
Apartments, Fresh Air
Society, Jewish Home for
Aged and Jewish Com-
munity Center. Leah
Snider, president of the
Sinai Guild, and Susan
Citrin, vice president of
Jewish Family Service,
also will participate.
Day chairmen for the vol-
unteer telephone shifts are:
Evelyn Levine, Reva Talon,
Cherie Chosid, Lynn
Bigelman, Bonnie Seligson,
Linda Garfield, Ellen Glen,
Sara Greenberg, Rhoda
Medow, Brina Pepper,
Bluma Siegel, Esther
Liwazer and Jeanette Sol-
way. Terran Leemis and
Beverly Leuchter are day
directors.
Reva 'Rosen is associate
chairman for Phonogift.

thousands of families in the
next few weeks by their
children.
Posters and flyers are
being distributed to met-
ropolitan area religious
schools and day schools by
the Solidarity Sunday edu-
cation committee. Chair-
man Cheryl Guyer is coor-
dinating the effort with
school principals.

Bikel to Speak
for AJCampaign

The trades and industries
divisions of the Campaign
will feature stage and sc-
reen personality Theodore
Bikel as guest speaker at its
Thursday fund-raiser at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The 7:45 p.m. meeting
and reception is open to
Campaign contributors of
$1,000 and over.
A native of Vienna, Bikel
emigrated to Israel as a

Solidarity Sunday will
take place from 9:30 a.m. to
8 p:m. Oct. 24 at United He-
brew Schools and is the
major telephone appeal for
the Campaign and Emer-
gency Fund. The solicita-
tion will involve hundreds
of volunteers and reach
12,000 households. Chair-
men Janice Schwartz and
Dr. Paul C. Feinberg have
contacted synagogues and
Jewish agencies throughout
the community to create
awareness and support of
the day.

the Israel Chamber
Theater. He is a veteran
actor and has received
acclaim for his roles on
Broadway, in London and
on television. The recipient
of several dramatic award
nominations, Bikel is per-
haps best-remembered for
his stage portrayal of Tevye
in "Fiddler on the Roof."
He is currently senior
vice president of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress.

have a special meeting Oct.
27 on behalf of the 1983 Al-
lied Jewish Campaign and
Israel Emergency Fund.
The 8 p.m. gathering will
take place at the Franklin
home of Mandell L. Be-
rman, chairman of Federa-
tion's Executive Commit-
tee.
The meeting will be
headed by Joel D. Tauber,
Campaign general chair-
man, and Dr. Conrad L.
Giles, Federation vice
president and chairman of
the agency board campaign,
Wayne L. Feinstein, Feder-
ation's new executive direc-
tor, will meet with the
group to discuss agency
needs.
The beneficiary agencies
of the Campaign include
Fresh Air Society, Hebrew
Free Loan Association,
Jewish Community Center,
Jewish Community Coun-
cil, Jewish Family Service,
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments, Jewish Home for
Aged, Jewish Vocational
Service and Community
Workshop, Resettlement
Service, Sinai Hospital and
Shiffman Clinic and United
Hebrew Schools.

Women to Hear
Sister Carol

Holocaust scholar Dr.
Carol Rittner will
speak on "Remembering:
Danger and Opportunity*"
when the Career Women of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion Women's Division
meets at 6 p.m. Thursday at
the Birmingham home of
Marlene Borman.
The dinner meeting will
be Career Women's first
fund-raiser on behalf of the
Campaign. Contributors of

$100 and over through the
division's professional
women are invited as guests
of Career Women leader-
ship.
As adjunct assistant pro-
fessor of religious and
interdisciplinary studies at
Mercy College of Detroit,
Sister Carol has done exten-
sive research and writing on
the Holocaust and is a spe-
cial assistant to historian
and author Elie Wiesel,
chairman of the U.S.
Holocaust Council.

Young Leadership
Mission Meeting

A recruitment meeting
for the United Jewish Ap-
peal's Young Leadership
Mission to Israel next
spring will be held 8 p.m.
Oct. 27 at Laurel Woods
club house.
Detroiters age 25-40 have
been invited to join the
10-day "Yachad" mission,
sponsored by the UJA
Young Leadership Cabinet
and Young Women's Lead-
ership Cabinet, and coordi-
nated locally by the Jewish
Welfare Federation. The
mission will take place
April 10-20, and will offer
1,500 young American Jews
the opportunity for inten-
sive travel and study in Is-
rael as they celebrate the
state's 35th anniversary.
According to Michael
Feldman, local _recruitment
chairman, the Oct. 27 meet-
ing will provide background
information on the mission
goals and itinerary. Carl
Kaplan, UJA national mis-
sion chairman, will explain
the program and answer
questions.
