Jewish News

Is Barred
The Jewish News
editor and publisher
Philip Slomovitz and
news editor Alan Hitsky
were denied admission to
the press conference. Ac-
companied by Janet
Aronoff and Rae
Sharfman who had been
observing the trial, they
were originally told that
their press credentials
would have to be
checked.
A man who first said he
was "Joe Smith," and later
said he was John Nikas,
came out of the press con-
ference room and said the
press identification was not
good enough. After Hitsky
showed Nikas his Michigan
Press Association card,
Nikas changed his re-
sponse, saying the press
conference was open only to
daily newspapers and radio
and television reporters.
Meanwhile, persons at
and behind the registration
table were commenting,
"Why do they want to come
in? Haven't they done
enough?" "Even our own
police can't get in." "Any-
thing you write will be
biased anyway."
After the 90-minute press
conference, several of these
persons followed The
Jewish News representa-
tives outside the church. No
other comments were made,
however.

Events Greet
Dr. Charles Kremer
A social evening at the
home of Elaine (Mrs. Leo)
Stern, on Thursday, Oct. 7,
which turned out to be im-
mediately after the Trifa
confession and the order for
his deportation, developed.
into an event of local his-
toric significance.
It was an event that was
scheduled to greet Dr.
Charles Kremer, who
pushed the government for
30 years to prosecute Trifa.
It became just that as well
as an evaluation of what
had occurred and a time for
reporting and judging the
events.
Ida (Mrs. Myron) Joyrich,
who hosted Dr. Kremer dur-
ing the first week of his visit
here, gave a dramatic ac-
count of the events during
the first two days of the
hearings.
Then she reported on
the final session as well
as the press conference
with Justice Department
spokesman Allan A.
Ryan.
Mrs. Joyrich paid honor
to Kremer, crediting him
with his devotion to an im-
portant mission, his years of
research during which he
collected data accusing
Trifa of the crimes.
She gave special em-
phasis to Ryan's statement
that there were more cases
pending, of 12 being consid-
ered for deportation, 13
others who may be stripped
of U.S. citizenship.
It was the address of
Kremer himself that made

the evening a memorable
one. He made a strong plea
for vigilance against recur-
ring Nazism, for exposing
the criminals.
He proceeded espe-
cially to appeal for sup-
port for Israel, for de-
fense of Israel's aims for
security.
And he urged that the
government of Menahem
Begin be defended, that the
Israel prime minister be
given the fullest respect of
the American Jewish com-
munity. He credited Begin
with devoted loyalty and
courageous dedication as an
assurance that Israel will
not be harmed.
Kremer said he had in the
making two books, one ex-
posing the crimes against
the Jewish people and an-
other autobiographical.
He appealed for aid to en-
able him to co-produce his
works and to carry on his
labors in exposing Nazi
criminals.
Featured during the
evening was the pre-
sentation of clips from
video tape from a
documentary now in the
making to show the ex-
tent of the Romanian
Iron Guard anti-Semitic
activities and their bar-
barism and mass mur-
ders.
They were explained by
the narrator of the film,
Linda Hunt, director of
Thunderbird Video Prod-
uctions, under whose direc-
tion the documentary is
being prepared for national
showings. She stated that
several Jewish groups have
already provided a portion
of the necessary funds for
this project and she ex-
pressed the hope that the
additional help needed will
be provided. Appearing
with her was Dennis De-
Baudit, who is assisting in
gathering the material for
this project.
There was applause for

Dr. Kremer during Shemini
Atzeret services at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek on Saturday
morning. It was an unusual
nerformance by the congre-
gation that overflowed with
more than 100 in the aisles
in addition to those seated,
when Rabbi Irwin Groner
introduced Dr. Kremer and
spoke with pride of his dedi-
cated task to expose the
anti-Semitic and Nazi guilt
of Archbishop Trifa.
There was additional
applause during that serv-
ice when Congressman
William Brodhead reported
on his trip to Russia.

Jews Attacked

PARIS (JTA) — Several
Jews were injured on the
Tunisian Island of Djerba
last week when pro-
Palestinian demonstrators
attacked people going to the
synagogue to attend Succot
services.
According to unconfirmed
reports, one man had his ear
cut off in a scuffle while on
his way to the Um Suk Syn
agogue on the island. Two
cars belonging to Jewish
businessmen were stoned
and slightly damaged, the
reports say.
In the city of Zarzis, in
the south of Tunisia, a
woman suffered facial
cuts during last month's
anti-Semitic incidents,
according to Jewish
travelers returning from
Tunis. Earlier reports
said that there had been
no Jewish victims and
that the damage to
Jewish-owned property
had only been slight.
The Tunisian press re-
ported that 26 demon-
strators suspected in the at-
tacks have been jailed.
