PLO Factions
Syrian Puppets
WASHINGTON
Newsweek magazine re-
ported this week that Syria
is establishing a "shadow
PLO" in case the Palestine
Liberation Organization's
Yasir Arafat joins any Mid-
dle East peace negotiations.
Newsweek said Syrian
President Hafez Assad is
trying to coordinate the
Syrian-backed Al Saiqa
PLO faction and the Iraqi-
based Abu Nidal.
The magazine quoted un-
named Arab moderates as
saying Assad began his plan
after Arafat declined to set-
tle in Damascus after the
PLO were forced out of Be-
irut by Israel.
Marriages
Dr. Claudia Holzman
and Dr. David Lipsitz were
married Sunday in the
home of the bride's parents.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme of
Temple Israel officiated.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin
Holzman of Oak Park. Par-
ents of the bridegroom are
Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lipsitz of
Oak Park. The couple are
residing in Pueblo, Colo.
Haig Blames
Bush, Clark
NEW YORK — Former
Secretary of State Alexan-
der Haig acknowledged that
members of the Reagan
Administration may have
encouraged the Palestine
Liberation Organization to
stay in Beirut because they
insisted that Israel would
not invade the Lebanese
capital.
Responding to questions
from Barbara Walters dur-
ing a taped interview on
ABC-TV's "20/20" program,
Haig acknowledged the
rumors that persons in the
Administration (believed to
be Vice President George
Bush and National Security
Adviser William Clark)
made statements that may
have prolonged the PLO
stay in west Beirut and led
to the Israeli advance into
Beirut.
