Michigan Jewish History Recorded in Pisgah 125th Anniversary

An historic record mark-
ing the 125th anniversary
of Pisgah Lodge of Bnai
Brith will serve to record
major achievements in
Michigan Jewish history in
the annals of the oldest frat-
ernal order in the state.
The Pisgah Lodge an-
niversary will be celebrated
at a dinner-dance at Adat
Shalom Synagogue on Oct.
24, beginning with cocktails
at 6:30 p.m.
The occasion will be
utilized to recall the serv-
ices to Michigan and
American Jewries by the
Bnai Brith leaders here who
were among the pioneers in

the movement nationally.
For 78 years, Pisgah
Lodge was the only Bnai
Brith chapter here. It
gave inspiration to new
groups and that record
has grown into making
Michigan a predominant
state in Bnai Brith ranks.
Pisgah received its De-
troit charter from Bnai
Brith on Nov. 24, 1857 with
a roll call of 25 men and re-
mained the only lodge in the
Detroit area for 78 years. Its
membership participated in
the formation of District 2
and later in the present Dis-
trict 6.
Pisgah helped father

other lodges in the area
with its members leaving to
become leaders in 1939 in
Louis Marshall Lodge, and
shortly afterward in Detroit
Lodge, Theodor Herzl and
the East Side Lodge.

Sweet Red

Even with these new
lodges being formed, Pisgah
grew to have the largest
paid-up membership of any
other Bnai Brith lodge in
the world during 1944-
1945. After this period, Pis-

gah became the spnniEord-
for 20 more new lodges in
the Detroit area.
In 1936, Pisgah in-
itiated a bowling league
of six teams which grew
into 72 teams totalling 360
regular bowlers. It was
one of the largest organ-
izations of its kind. This
brought the youth ele-
ment needed to keep Pis-
gah strong.
Today, after 46 years, de-
spite raids of its member-
ship by the new lodges, Pis-
gah boasts 36 teams. Pisgah
bowlers were involved in
the formation of what today
is the International Bnai
Brith Bowling Association.
Another of Pisgah's proud
highlights is its annual pic-
nic, which has drawn as
many as 1,000 guests in the
past.

There is a charge for Pis-
gah's 125th anniversary
event. For reservations, call
the lodge, 552-1966.
