THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Haifa University Enrolls More Support Under Louis Golden's Leadership Here Scores of new supporters of Haifa University were enrolled here through the efforts of the Detroit Chap- ter of American Friends of Haifa University, at the fourth annual Golf Day of the chapter which was fol- lowed by the annual par- ticipants' dinner, Tuesday evening, at Shenandoah Golf and Country Club. Louis H. -Golden, Detroit chapter organizer and its chairman, outlined the pro- gress achieved at the uni- versity, in his call for in- creased support of the uni- versity. A report on his recent visit to the university and his Israel tour was given by Maurice Chandler. Supplementing these ad- dresses, Sister Carol Ritt- ner, who has enrolled as a Haifa University supporter upon the founding of the De- troit chapter, spoke on the school's progress as she ob- served it on her recent visit which included a tour of Is- rael occupied areas in Lebanon. Golden and his associates took occasion to indicate that of the 7,000 students at Haifa University 600 are Arabs, thus emphasizing Is- raeli aims to strive for good relations with all non-Jews and with neighbors. Sister Carol called the educational opportunities provided for Arabs on an equal basis with Jews proof of the democratic spirit of Israel. Golden's pioneering ef- forts were acclaimed in messages university supporters received from Israel. The manner in which the Detroit leader in behalf of Haifa Univer- sity assumed his role as delineated by Haifa Uni- versity administrators as follows: Golden's roots to Haifa University go back to his grandparents, who settled in Afula, near Haifa, in 1935 (and are buried in that vicinity). His grandfather and father purchased land in Balfouria, under the Jewish Colonial Trust, in 1919 — and were both lifelong Zionists. In coming to Israel, vist- ing his family's memorial sites and now working closely with Haifa Univer- sity, he fulfilled a promise to his family to return to Zion and .not to forget his heri- tage. Among the persons Brodhead met with were the mother and brother ANATOLY SHCHARANSKY of Anatoly Shcharansky. Shcharansky, a leading tented to prison on member of the human trumped-up charges of rights and Soviet Jewry anti-Soviet actions and movements, was sen- spying for the U.S. He has not been permitted to re- ceive letters or visits from his family since January. WINTERIZE BONN (JTA) — Justice Minister Juergen Schmude of the Social Democratic Party has drafted legisla- tion to tighten laws against neo-Nazi activities in West Germany. The proposed legislation, which has been discussed in a Bundestag subcommit- tee, calls for empowering state prosecutors to bring to trial any person who denies publicly that the Holocaust occurred or that the Nazis committed genocide. It would also ban the import and distribution of Nazi emblems and other prop- aganda material in the country. The legislation does not include a ban on the distri- bution and sale of Nazi books and records which originated in Nazi Ger- many, such as Hitler's "Mein Kampf."
