irut.
The group said, "The coal-
ition of these groups has
called for the resignation of
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin and Defense Minister
Ariel Sharon, and complete
withdrawal of Israeli troops
from Beirut."
. "We are encouraged by
the immediate response of
Israelis to this tragedy,"
said Lenore Goldman of the
steering committee of De-
troit New Jewish Agenda.
"We see their opposition as
the only hope for a truly se-
cure Israel and security for
Jews throughout the
world."
"As Jews who love Is-
rael, we are stunned by
the massacre," said Prof.
Ronald Aronson. "This is
one of the most painful
moments I have known.
Israeli soldiers are oc-
cupying Lebanon; Israeli
soldiers moved into west
Beirut in violation of the
Habib agreement; Israeli
soldiers opened the gates
of the camps to the mur-
derers."
New Jewish Agenda re-
quested that a special Yiz-
kor prayer be said for the
massacre victims on Yom
Kippur. The group also dis-
tributed leaflets in endors-
ing the demonstrations.

All human situations

hence we often make

176 Injured in Arab Rioting

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Arab
villages throughout Israel
returned to normal last
Thursday after three days of
mass demonstrations and
riots over the Beirut mas-
sacre of Palestinians by
Phalangist Christians.
Municipal and village
employes were clearing up
and repairing roads, and
removing roadblocks and
burned tires. Shops and
schools reopened.
According to senior police
sources, 146 instances of
breaking the peace were
registered in the three days
of demonstrations and riots.
Most of Israel's 680,000
Arabs staged a general
strike called by Arab
mayors. It was one of the
worst the country has
known since its establish-
ment.
Unlike previous erup-
tions of political violence,
this time the demonstra-
tions spread like wild-fire
from northern villages all
the way down to the politi-
cally low-key Bedouin areas
in the Negev.
The worst demonstra-
tions were in Nazareth.
At least 130 persons were
injured, some of them by
police fire, in the various
demonstrations. A total
of 46 policemen were in-

jured by rocks thrown at
them by youths, and nine
police vehicles and 27
civilian vehicles were
wrecked by rioters.
Ninety-one rioters were
arrested.
Many Jewish settlements
which depend on Arab labor
were affected by the general
strike. Plants and
businesses were forced to
slow down their operations
or halt them altogether be-
cause workers failed to
show up.

Energy Agency
Suspends Israel

VIENNA — The Interna-
tional Atomic Energy
Agency suspended the Is-
raeli delegation's creden-
tials last Friday at the
agency's annual meeting.
That move prompted the
U.S. delegation to walk out
of the meeting.
The week-long meetings
came to an end 40 minutes
after the vote, making the
vote a symbolic move. Ear-
lier, the 110 members of the
IAEA narrowly defeated a
move to oust Israel entirely
from the agency.
