Designed for pre-teen readers, the book is set dur- ing the Spanish Inquisition and has a unique format. After the first few pages, each page ends in a set of choices. For example: As a Jew you are forced to study to convert to Catholicism. A priest discovers you reading a forbidden Jewish book. Roseman then presents his readers with the two choices: If you stay with the Catholic studies, turn to Page 45. If you decide to return to Judaism, turn to Page 46. On Page 45, the Jew con- verts to Catholicism and. he story ends. On Page 46, the Jew decides to run away and new choices are presented. With the multitude of choices, "The Cardinal's Snuffbox" becomes a whole series of stories, ever chang- ing as new choices are made. The book can be read and re-read, with each choice leading to different conclusions. The 110-page paperback volume has more than 40 endings. Roseman's many wind- ings and turnings, and the choices presented to the young reader, not only edu- cate the reader to many facts and events about the Inquisition but also place the reader in the position of the Jews, forced to make de- cisions about their beliefs. The brief pages are illustrated with line drawings by Bill Negon. Each re-reading offers new choices and new ad- ventures, all drawn from Jewish history. The volume also contains an eight-page glossary of Jewish and historic terms, people and places to aid the young reader. He believes that the pre- sent government failed to keep many of the promises it made. After stressing that Poland, with its population of 42 million, is considered to be bankrupt because of its $26 billion debt to foreign countries, how can one be calm about Israel, with her population of less than four million and a foreign debt of $22 billion? — Nevertheless, according to Ratlevi, one should not despair. Instead, moderni- zation of production and competitiveness in the world market are in order. He pointed out that Israeli-produced textiles are in great demand in Western Europe. Further- more, many of them are also imported, through Euro- pean intermediaries, into Arab oil countries, espe- cially Saudi Arabia.
