The Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 36)
`John Marshall Jr. High we
pledge again, our loyalty,
our love for thee; Oh Alma
Mater 210.' Then we broke
out in laughter. With a solid
background like that, how
couk, we help but be good
friends!
"Twenty years ago when
we visited here, we met
Esther and Davd Ginsburg,
native Detroiters, who were
friends of Claire and Sy.
Upon arriving here to live,
we met Esther and Dave
again and have developed a
relationship that surpasses
friendship. They are our
second family. Warm,
generous, interested, they
have helped make Michigan
`home.'
"This past winter the
Ginsburg family had a long
bout of illness. They com-
plained that they never got
out of their bathrobes. One
evening Leo and I went to
visit them. When we re-
moved our coats - we were
wearing our bathrobes!
Esther and David howled
with laughter. It was just
what the doctor ordered!
"Anita and Gene Sokoloff
moved to Michigan 10
years ago. Their phone
number was given to me by
a mutual New York friend.
After settling in a bit, I
called and met the Sololoffs.
They are the necest people
and we have become very
close friends.
"Teddy and Aubrey
Lansky, former Ann Arbo-
rites, make up the fourth
couple, together with the
Ginsburgs, Sokoloffs and
ourselves, of a loosely-knit
club we call The Wooden
Spoon Society.' Naturally,
belonging to the club entails
dining at some wonderful
restaurants around town
like Tweeny's, Excaliubur,
Carl's Chop House, Restau-
rant Duglass, The Meating
Place and others.
"We've had season tickets
to the Fisher and the
Meadow Brook Theater.
We've seen more shows here
than we ever would have in
New York - no need to
drive almost two hours from
our home on Long Island to
Manhattan and then look
for an expensive garage far
from the theater to park in.
"On New Year's Day we
go to a friends' football
party to watch the game on
TV and indulge in fabulous
home-cooking. Inevitably,
Leo wears the sweat shirt
our daughter Adele, gave
him. Imprinted on the front
in bold letters is the name of
the school she graduated
from - Ohio State Univer-
sity. He hasn't been lynched
- yet!
"When Leo became ill in
Coldwater while on a busi-
ness trip, friends like Anita
Sokoloff and her daughter
Jane and Dolly Mehr and
Barbara Reiner traveled
five hours one day to pro-
vide an entourage of trans-
portation for us.
"Elaine Kahrnoff, Eileen
and Marvin Goldman, Rose
and Mark Hechler and so
many other wonderful
people have touched our
•
plexion or slightly flatter
noses than ourselves, is not
a pretty thing when you
look into it too much.
The conquest of the earth,
which mostly means the
taking it away from those
who have a different corn-
2' .190...
lives, it's no wonder t hat
when people ask us THE
question, our response is,
`We sure DO like living in
Michigan.' "
