Jews Increasing on WB
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
A recent study found that
the land in Judea and
Samaria available for Is-
raeli settlement is much
more extensive than prev-
iously known, covering 55
to 65 percent of the entire
West Bank. The study ti-
tled the West Bank Data
Base Project was con-
ducted by Dr. Meron Ben-
venisty, a former deputy
mayor of Jerusalem.
The study found that Is-
rael exercises direct own-
ership over 395,000 to
410,000 of the West
Bank's 1.45 million acres,
or 27 to 28 percent of the
land.
Dr. Benvenisty's study
also found that despite a
popular belief that the
West Bank Arab popula-
tion of about 800,000 can
never be overtaken by the
Jewish population, which
has a lower birth rate, the
demographic trends show
a gradual Jewish gain on
the Arabs because Arabs
have been moving out of
the territory.
From 1968 to 1980, the
study says, the average
annual growth rate was
1.4 percent for the West

Press Freedom
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
At a stormy meeting of the
Israel Journalists' Associa-
tion last week, accusations
were levelled that the gov-
ernment was attempting
to curb freedom of the
press. Examples quoted in-
cluded the refusal to allow
journalists into Lebanon
during the first days of the
war and their exclusion
from the Golan Heights
during political turmoil
with the Druze.
Both the prime minister
and defense minister were
accused of discriminating
against journalists - un-
friendly to the govern-
ment.
journalists,
Other
however, backed the
authorities, accusing
most media people of
trying to bring down the
present government.
The association decided
to defend press freedom by
campaigning against its
detractors and not to cover
any event in which gov-
ernment officials prevent
the participation of any
journalists.

Renewal Project
EIN ILOZA (JNI) — The
residents of this small,
Arab neighborhood in East
Jerusalem helped build a
road and support walls as
part of a project to over-
come chronic budget de-
ficits through self-help
enterprise.
After completion of the
project, for which the
municipality provided the
materials and the local
community the labor,
Jerusalem Mayor Teddy
Kollek thanked the resi-
dents.

Bank Arabs and -2.5
percent for Jews in Is-
rael. About 100,000
Arabs left Judea and
Samaria in those years,
half of the natural in-
crease. In 1980 alone,
there was a natural in-
crease of 20,000 in the
Arab population, but.
17,000 people left the
area.
There is little place for
additional Arabs to live,
according to the study.
TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Is-
rael Defense Forces Chief of
Staff Gen. Raphael Eitan
recently reported that Is-
rael has more soldiers than
it needs at the present time.
He said more than 50 per-
cent of the IDF soldiers vol-
unteer for dangerous duty.
The paratroop brigades
have four times more volun-
teers than they need and the
intelligence services have
more volunteers than they
can use.
