Women's Allied Campaign Rally Oct. 13 to Launch Phonogift

A women's community-
wide rally for the 1983 Al-
lied Jewish Campaign and
special Israel Emergency
Fund will be held Oct. 13 to
help launch the AJCam-
paign Women's Division

momentum is building for
the Oct. 13 rally and the
Phonogift telethon which
will reach 5,000 women in
the metropolitan area.
Those attending the rally
will be briefed on PhOnogift
and its role' in meeting this
year's special needs. Mrs.
Hart said that the three-day
telethon plays an important
part in the division's over-
all fund-raising effort,
which boosted the 1982
Campaign by $2.5 million.

Phongift precedes the
community's Solidarity
Sunday telephone appeal
on Oct. 24. On Solidarity
Sunday, Detroit Jews
will be asked to show
their support and unity
with fellow Jews at home,
in Israel and around the
world. Hundreds of vol-
unteers from all the
Campaign divisions will
man phones at United
Hebrew Schools on be-
half of the Campaign and
Emergency Fund.

Campaign chairman for the
division. Phonogift leaders
include: Reva Rosen, as-

Singles Mission
Meeting Tuesday

In preparation for the Un-
ited Jewish Appeal's first
winter Singles Mission to
Israel in December, a re-
cruitment meeting will be
held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at
United Hebrew Schools.
The mission is taking
place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 and will
be similar to singles mis-
sions held each summer. It
will provide 20.0 particip-
ants nationally with the op-
portunity to immerse them-
selves in Israeli life with
their contemporaries. The
group will meet with gov-
ernment and Jewish
Agency officials, as well as
Israelis in all walks of life.
Highlighting the 10-day
program will be visits to ab-
sorption centers, kibutzim,
Jerusalem, the Galilee and
Masada.
The Oct. 5 meeting will
provide details on the
itinerary, costs and future
orientation briefings.
Members of past missions
will be available to answer
questions.

Hold Joint Meeting

Because of the urgent na-
ture of the 1983 Allied
Jewish Campaign and spe-
cial Israel Emergency
Fund, the seven sections of
the Campaign's Profes-
sional Health Division are
combining for the first time
for a division-wide fundrais-
ing meeting and reception
Oct. 11 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
The 7:45 p.m. gathering is
open to Campaign con-
tributors of $1,000 and over
through the division, and
their spouses. Guest
speaker will be Israel
Ainitai, Israeli lecturer and
television producer.
Dr. Marvin D. Siegel and
Dr. Stephan R. Morse are
division chairmen. Drs. Eli
V. Berger, Ralph Coskey
and Howard A. Parven are
co-chairmen. Associate
chairman are Dr. Jules
Altman, Eugene

Woman's Fight
Against Cancer
Topic of Book

Rena Blumberg, host of a
popular Cleveland radio
program and daughter of
former United Jewish Ap-
peal Chairman Ezra Shap-
iro, describes her ordeal
with cancer in
"Headstrong," a new book
from Crown Publishers.
Mrs. Blumberg was diag-
nosed as having breast
cancer in 1977. She went
through a mastectomy and
painful chemotherapy
treatments before going
into remission two years la-
ter.
In addition to the phys-
ical affects of the cancer,
"Headstrong" details the
toll the illness took on
Mrs. Blumberg's rela-
tionships with her family
and friends and how it al-
tered her career, her vol-
unteer work and her reli-
gion.
Mrs. Blumberg serves on
the boards of some 27 organ-
izations devoted to women's
interests, cultural affairs,
health and human services
and Jewish causes. She
lives in Shaker Heights,
Ohio with her husband and
son.

Bramson Grant

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Bramson ORT School
has been awarded a
$10,000 federal grant to
purchase four additional
microcomputers, in-
structional and word proc-
essing software.
