tion will stage the Bnai
Brith Great American Tra-
ditions Award Dinner Nov.
15 at the Westin Hotel.
John C. McCabe and
Stanley J. Winkelman will
be the co-recipients of this
award, which is presented
to "deserving recipients
whose life, vision ; philan-
thropy, community leader-
ship and outstanding con-
tribution to the social and
cultural life of our nation
best exemplify the Ameri-
can tradition of selfless
service."
McCabe came to Blue
Shield of Michigan in 1965
as the executive director
and was named president in
1966. When the Blue Cross
and Blue Shield Plans in
Michigan became consoli-
dated in 1975, McCabe was
named as president and
chief executive officer.
McCabe is vice chair-
man and a member of the
executive committee of
the board of directors of
the Blue Shield Associa-
tions and a member of the
board of directors of BCS
Financial Corp. in
Chicago. He also is on the
board of directors of the
Blue Cross Association.
He holds a Bachelor of
Business Administration
degree from Manhattan
College and did graduate
work in economics at Col-
umbia and New York Uni-
versities. Active in numer-
ous professional and com-
munity organizations,
McCabe is past president of
the Michigan Health Coun-
cil, a fellow of American
Health Association, a
member of the Interna-
tional Federalism of Volun-
tary Health Funds and the
American Academy of Med-
ical Administrators.
In 1973, McCabe was ap-
pointed chairman of the Na-
tional Alliance of
Businessmen for the Detroit
area.
He is on the board of di-
rectors of the Metropolitan
Fund, the United Founda-
tion and the Advisory
Council of Junior Achieve-
ment of Southeast Michi-
gan. McCabe is a trustee of
the Manpower Education
Institute of New York City
and former director of the
Bank of the Commonwealth
as well as former president
of the Police Athletic

Winkelman joined
Winkelman Stores, Inc.
(formerly Winkelman
Brothers Apparel, Inc.) in
1946. He worked his way
up through the ranks as
general merchandise
administrator, vice
president in charge of
merchandise and direc-
tor, senior vice president
and executive vice
president and then in
1976 to the highest posi-
tion which he now holds,
chairman of the board
and chief executive offi-
cer.
Winkelman
was
graduated from the Univer-
sity of Michigan in 1943
with a Bachelor of Science
Degree. He was a lieutenant
in the United States Navy.
Winkelman has been
actively involved in a
variety of -causes, among
them the Council of Jewish
