GOP Seeks Jewish Involvement

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The chairman of the Repub-
lican National Committee
on Tuesday urged Jewish
voters to become actively
involved beyond simple fi-
nancial support for election
candidates.
Richard Richards said
that when Jewish voters
and organizations con-
cerned with Israel select a
candidate to support, they

should at the same time
compare the two latest U.S.
administrations.
Richards, speaking to
some 100 people at a confer-
ence sponsored by the
Jewish American Political
Action Committee
(JAPAC), rejected categori-
cally that President Reagan
is not fully dedicated to the
security and safety of Israel.
He added that this position
remains an underlying con-
sistency within the Reagan
presidency.
Richards received a
round of applause when
he stated that if a situa-
tion came about that the
U.S. had just one friend in
the Middle East, "Im
satisfied its going to be
Israel."
The Republican commit-
tee chairman said he be-
lieves "Israel is getting a
bum rap" with the U.S.
media coverage of the
events in Lebanon. "I don't
think you're getting a fair
shake." Richards urged
American Jews to confront
the press and be sure that
the other side of the story is
'presented.
The president of JAPAC

Seymour Cohen, released
the text of a letter sent to
President Reagan in which
Cohen asserted that while
there are some positive
steps in the peace initiative
proposed by the President
on Sept. 1, the Administra-
tion's position should re-
main neutral and let the Is-
raeli people decide what it
sees best for its own security
arrangethents.
