DSO Opens With Gary Bertini
The Detroit Symphony
Orchestra had its opening
concert on Tuesday. The
sold-out event featured the
orchestra's music adviser
and conductor Gary Bertini
and violinist Itzhak
Perlman.
Bertini was born in Rus-
sia and grew up in Israel. He
made his debut with the Is-
rael Philharmonic in 1958
and has appeared regularly
with that outstanding or-
chestra. Bertini founded the
Israel Chamber Orchestra
and the Rinat Chamber
Choir in 1965 and was the
first artistic director of both
organizations.
On Thursday evening,
Maestro Bertini will
begin a weekend series
with the DSO, conducting
Top Woman, Three Others
Skip Karate Trial on Holiday
NEWTON, Mass. — Pam
Glaser, the top-ranked
American woman in karate,
passed up a chance to corn-
pete with the U.S. team
going to November's world
championship in Taiwan
because last weekend's
trials were held during
Rosh Hashana.
"This is one of the biggest
decisions I've ever had to
make in my life," Ms.
Glaser, 26, a student at the
University of Massachu-
setts, said.
Ms. Glaser was joined by
three other Jewish people
who had sought to make the
trip to Taiwan but did not
attend the trials for reli-
gious reasons. Lea Sukenik,
25, of New York and Maria
Cohen, 19, of Morton Grove,
Ill. chose not to attend the
tryouts. Alex Sternberg,
who had hoped to qualify as
a referee, also skipped the
competition.
Officials are considering
a possible run-off between
Plaza
ali
and bakery
last weekend's winners and
those who chose not to com-
pete. Another possibility is
taking past performances
into account in the selection
of the American team.
