In fact, even though this last year saw a number of impressive performances by the country's teams and individuals, there was an overall feeling of disap- pointment. Nowhere this more evident than in basketball. The Maccabi Tel Aviv team waltzed into the final of the European Cup play-off with some stunning displays, only to produce a lackluster performance which saw easily beaten by the Italian cha mpions Squibb Cantu. In soccer t here was also a feeling of rilissed oppor - tunities. It had been as that the national squad had n o hope of qual- ifying for th e world cup fi - nals in Spain. Placed for the first time in a tough Euro - pean group b ecause of polit - ical isolati on by Asian leagues, the team did so well that ma ny pundits felt they could have done even better. The most notable Per- formance was last No- vember's convincing 4-1 victory ove r Portugal in Tel Aviv. Th e hero of the afternoon was Bennie Tabak, whose first half hat-trick p ut an end to the visitors' dream of vic- tory. But if Tab ak was the hero of this game, he was -disap- pointing in s ome others. In other home games, Israel lost to Scotlan d 0-1, and tied with Northe rn Ireland and with Sweden 0-0. The Is- raeli forwards failure to score, despite ample oppor- tunities, didn 't provide the wins which would have taken the tea m to Spain. The Israeli defense was marshalled b y Avi Cohen, playing once again for Mac- cabi Tel Aviv after a spell in England with Liverpool. Two of the country's less well-known and wealthy clubs, Hapoel Kfar Saba and Hapoel Yehud, won the national league and state cup, respectively. The state of the coun- try's sporting facilities came under fire from Is- rael Olympic Committee Chairman Yitzhak Ofek, who pointed out that Is- rael spend s less per capita on sp orts than any other industrialized na- fion. But Y ariv Oren, di- rector of sports at the Ministry of Education, feels matters are improv- ing. A survey showed in 1970 that only 10 percent of adult Israelis partici- pated in sport, while in 1981 this figure had risen to 40 percent. As elsewhere, many Is- raelis have taken to jogging. Some have been inspired by the achievements of Zehava Shmueli, a 28-year-old mother of two. She finished 25th out of 2,500 runners in last October's New York Marathon and holds Israeli records for 5, 10 and 25 kilometers. Another sporting heroine is 18-year-old Lior Birkhan, who holds Israeli swimming records in freestyle, medley and backstroke and is cur- rently being coached in the U.S. Moshe Ganzi is one of the world's leading water skiers, while Eytan Fried- lander and Shimshon Brockman are former Euro= pean champions in the 470 sailing division. Tennis is also an Israeli forte. The opening of a new tennis center in Haifa brings the Israel Tennis Centers total of courts to 65 (5 percent of the country's tennis courts), catering to 85,000 children and count- less adults. Here, too, the country has its hero, with Shlorno Glickstein in 29th place in the ATP ratings.
