Detroiters recall that
Maronite Christians in De-
troit were unhesitant in

The Shofar

By JONATHAN GOTLIB

The Shofar Blows
the time is here
Days of awe
filled with fear

Wondering what
His will shall be
Trying to know
the holy decree

Upon His glory
His name so pure
Through every age
it will endure

their affiliation with Zionist
leaders in support of Israel.
The only Arab-language
newspaper that was pro-
Israel was published in De-
troit. In Lebanon, however,
that feeling was hidden
until this year, Maronite
Christians laboring under
fear of being assassinated if
they took a strong pro-
Zionist stand.
Whatever dissension
from the near-unified
Jewish position in defense
of embattled Israel came,
recognizably, from the left.
While support for Israel
was solidified, Menahem
Begin lost supporters here
and his opposition to the
formation of an investigat-
ing commission to study the
Beirut facts created the
anger judged by the reac-
tions reported here.

Headlines in the local
newspapers generally
negating Israel's credi-
bility have been a source
of resentment and the
special articles dealing
with the Middle East are
generally viewed as hav-
ing been very damaging
to good will generally as
well as for Israel.

The invasion of the De-
troit offices of U.S. Senators
Donald Riegle and Carl
Levin by a group calling it-
self Palestinians was a reit-
eration of enmities directed
at Israel's existence while
ignoring the reality of the
Christian-Muslim conflict
which led to the Beirut car-
nage. (See separate story on
Page 12.)
Especially distressing for
the Jewish community is

the attitude of Michigan
Congressman George Croc-
kett. His statements de-
manding abandonment of
U.S. aid for Israel and his
consistent anti-Israel views
are seen as distressing.
Congressman Crockett's
recent warning that he will
strive to unite fellow blacks
with Arabs against Israel
has been among the most
damaging
attitudes
threatening
peaceful
black-Jewish relations.

A' prominent local
leader expressed the
hope that Congressman
Crockett will abandon
the antagonism in the
best interests of peace
among all Detroiters.

All of the aspersions
against Israel, including
Crockett's, were accom-
panied by attacks on U.S.
policy and demands that
U.S. aid for Israel be im-
mediately and completely
withdrawn.
On this score there was
comfort Wednesday in
statements by an aide to
Sen. Charles Percy (R-Ill.),
chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Commit-
tee, and by Rep. Clement
Zablocki (D-Wis.), chair-
man of the House Foreign
Affairs Committee. Both
men's offices said that aid to
Israel will continue.
Both men are among Is-
rael's severest critics in
Congress. Zablocki said he
was not convinced that Is-
rael's actions warranted a
cut-off and added that more
facts would be needed before
such a drastic step could
even be considered.

the Metropolitan Detroit
houses of worship and in re-
sponses to calls for support
for Israel, that Israel will
not be punished for the gen-
erally described "blunder"
by the military. On that
score, there was an expres-
sion of strong endorsement
for the demand for a study
commission to probe into
the charges.
This was accompanied by
the deep resentment ex-
pressed over a tendency to
make Israel the scapegoat
while ignoring the basic
occurrence: of Christians
having murdered Muslims.
