Phalangist Extremists Slaughtered Palestinians
operating behind Israeli
lines since June, their links
with the official Phalangist
leadership in east Beirut
may have been weakened,
and that may explain why
the Phalangist Party denies
having issued any order for
its men to enter the camps.
"The Lebanese soldier
said the Christian
militiamen told him as they
went in and out of the
camps. "We have been wait-
ing a long time for this day."
"The depth of the hatred
of these men for Palesti-
nians could hardly have
been unknown to the Is-
raelis, who have been work-
ing with these Phalangists
to set up checkpoints and es-
tablish order south of Beirut
Thomas Friedman, re-
porting to the New York
Times on Tuesday from Be-
irut, traced the reasons and
historic experiences that
have led to the bloody ven-
geance involving the con-
flicting Christian and
Muslim elements in Leba-
non. He stated:
"The Lebanese soldier's
account is consistent with
other reports that the main
assault force was made up of
the so-called Phalangist
Damuri Brigade, consisting
of some of the more extreme
elements in the Christian
militia who have vowed to
avenge the death of their
relatives since the 1975-
1976 civil war.
"Since they have been
since the beginning of the
invasion.
"Another man, who iden-
tified himself as a Christian
militiaman and who was
standing at an Israeli
checkpoint at Khalde junc-
tion south of Beirut today,
boasted that he had been in
Sabra and had killed a
Palestinian woman and her
two children while the
woman was holding a
Kalashnikov rifle.
" 'I killed them,' he said,
pounding on his chest. He
declined to give his name or
say which militia he be-
longed to, although he wore
an army uniform with some
Hebrew writing on it. The
Israeli soldiers standing
next to him said he was a

Phalangist and was 'crazy.'
"It has been confirmed
that 500 to 600 Palestinian
civilians, whom foreign doc-
tors from Gaza Hospital had
seen under militia custody
in Shatila Saturday morn-
ing, were released; they had
been unaccounted for, and it
had been believed they
might have been killed or
taken away. Western dip-
lomatic sources and report-
ers have confirmed from
people in the group that
they were marched from
Shatila to the city's sports
stadium, where the Israelis
were gathering Palestinian
men to check their identifi-
cation papers.
"A 40-year-old man
who was in the group
said most of those with
him had been hiding in
their homes in and
around the camps Satur-
day morning when men
came through with
loudspeakers saying that
they were Israelis and
that it was safe to come
out.
"When they came out,
they found Haddad
militiamen and Phalan-
gists, who led them off to the
stadium. On the way, he
said someone rolled a gre-
nade into the procession,
killing one man and his
young son and wounding
four others.
Additional Yom Kippur
Service Is Explained
By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1982, JTA, Inc.)
On the day of Yom Kip-
pur an additional service is
added to the liturgy after
the afternoon Minha serv-
ice. This service is called
"Neila."
In the days of the Talmud
this added service was re-
cited at the end of every fast
day. Today we recite it only
once a year at the end of the
fast day of Yom Kippur.
This practice gives us a
last chance to repent and to
pray for the blessing and
forgiveness of the Almighty
before the period of repen-
tence ends. It is also claimed
that when the Holy Temple
in Jerusalem was still in
Synagogue
existence and functioning
there would be such a serv-
ice at the end of the day,
every day.
The term "Neila"
means "closing," or
"locking." In the days of
the ancient temple this is
said to have referred to
the time at the end of the
day when the gates of the
Temple were being
closed and locked.
One commentary com-
pared this to the experience
of a royal servant who re-
quests a gift from the king
before he leaves the royal
presence and has the gates
locked behind him
(Levush).
