Mortada delivered the news personally to Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir and later met at his own re- quest for close to an hour with President Yitzhak Na- von. Both Israeli leaders ex- pressed the hope that he would be back soon, and he, according to Israeli sources, joined in that hope. Meanwhile, Israeli offi- cials said that Israel's Am- bassador to Egypt, Moshe Sasson, who is in Jerusalem On home leave for Rosh Hashana, would return to his post as scheduled. There was no intention of "reciprocating" by keeping Sasson here "for consulta- tions," too, the officials said. Peace Dialogue TEL AVIV — Five Lebanese professors from Kaslik University in Beirut visited Tel Aviv University recently to exchange ideas with faculty members. The Lebanese group, while visiting at the univer- sity's Center for Strategic Studies, called for the estab- lishment of a bilateral committee to continue to discuss issues of mutual concern to Lebanon and Is- rael for their common bene- fit. The Maronite Christian professors feel that "peace between Israel and Lebanon in essence already exists, but it must be declared. The timing and opportunity for making this peace is some- thing that must be dis- cussed, they said. "Israeli backing will enable the Lebanese government to handle crisis situations that arise, and peace between Is- rael and Lebanon will strengthen Lebanese unity and peace within Lebanon." Prof. Haim Ben- Shahar, president of Tel Aviv University, outlined existing research proj- ects at the school de- signed to enhance Middle East peace and wel- comed Lebanese partici- pation. "Universities can serve as a bridge," he said, "by act- ing on the academic dimen- sion to develop academic re- lations to mutual benefit to the two institutions and to the two countries. This is the first visit — a begin- ning, we hope, of a long, fruitful and favorable asso- ciation." If men could learn from history, what lessons it might teach us! But passion and party blind our eyes, and the light which experi- ence gives is a lantern on the stern, which shines only on the waves behind us. —Samuel Taylor Coleridge 4
