Added to the many con-
demnations of Pope
John Paul II for the credibil-
ity he provided for Yasir
Arafat by meeting with him
at the Vatican last week
was the sharp view of such a
visit by Andrew M. Greeley
in his syndicated column in
the Free Press on Monday.
Greeley wrote in part:
"Will the Roman Curia
now advise the Pope to re-
ceive the gunmen who cur-
rently head the Irish Repub-
lican Army?
"Having advised him to
grant an audience to Yasir
Arafat, the scruffy little kil-
ler who heads the Palestine
Liberation Organization,
the Curia, to be consistent,
ought also to suggest that
the Pope talk to the head of
the IRA.
"I can see no difference
between the PLO and the
IRA. Both are terrorist
organizations whose
hands are covered with
the blood of innocents.
Both represent people

who have been the vic-
tims of historic injustice.
Both are from countries
that are occupied by
powers that have consid-
erably less justification
for being there.
"Both are committed to
the notion that the end jus-
tifies the means, that terror
is a legitimate form of polit-
ical action.
"The reason that there is
so much terrorism in the
world is that terrorism
works. It is a highly suc-
cessful strategy for obtain-
ing attention, influence and
power.
"But isn't there anyone in
the Roman Curia with
enough brains to say to the
Pope, 'Hey, Santita, when
you honor Yasir Arafat, you
encourage the same kind of
politics that led to that
nutty Turk pumping bullets
into your body a year and a
half ago?'
"The answer has to be no.
Despite its totally unearned
reputation for diplomatic

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Scores of police and civi-
lians were injured Wednes-
day in widespread riots and
demonstrations throughout
the Arab-populated regions
of Israel protesting the mas-
sacre of Palestinian civi-
lians in Israel-occupied
west Beirut last Friday.
Disturbances were also
reported on the West Bank
and Gaza Strip where a
general strike by local mer-
chants shut down virtually
all business.
Many Israeli drivers
were reported injured
when their vehicles were
stoned by Arab -demon-
strators in Israel. A
police squad rescued
other officers when the
police station in Shafr
Amr village was set afire
by rioters. A police offi-
cer was injured when
some 5,000 demon-
strators hurled rocks at
police vehicles on the
Wadi Ara Road and a
constable was hurt when
the local police station
was attacked in the Is-
raeli Arab village of
Taibe.

WASHINGTON — Al-
though President Hafez
Assad of Syria declined PLO
overtures to attack Israeli
positions on the Golan
Heights during the early
days of Israel's operations in
Lebanon, Newsweek maga-
zine says Assad has hardly
turned into a dove.
The magazine said Assad
was fearful of a devastating
defeat if he attacked the Is-
raelis, but he blasted fellow
Arab leadets at the recent
summit in Fez, Morocco for
treating PLO chief Ydsir
Arafat as a hero. He said the
Arabs want to pressure
Arafat into making peace
with Israel.

Mohammed called Jews
"the People of the Book."

Serious rioting also broke
out in Nazareth, the largest
Arab city in Israel. Police
fired into the air but several
Arabs were reported
wounded. In Jaffa, adjacent
to and for many years part
of Tel Aviv, police arrested
15 demonstrators after 400
persons gathered at an Arab
youth center, raised black
mourning flags, burned
tires and threw stones at
passers-by.

suavity, there is no one in
the Curia likely to see a
connection between the
PLO gunning down Olym-
pic athletes and a terrorist
shooting the Pope.
`The faith of Catholics,
fortunately, does not de-
pend on either the virtue
or the intelligence or the
consistency of the Roman
Curia. The folks in the
Vatican have embarras-
sed us before and they'll
probably embarrass us
again.
"Only let it be clear that
they fall within the group
that the master had in mind
when he condemned some of
the scribes and pharisees:
`Hypocrites, whitened
sepulchers, all white and
shining on the outside and
inside filled with dead
men's bones.' "
