12 Friday, September 24, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Detroit Protestors Invade Senators Offices to Blame Israel, U.S. Echoes of charges, ac- cusations and condemna- tion of Israel were heard here, in the McNamara Federal Building, from a group calling itself the Palestinians. They invaded the offices r HOUSE of SHUTTERS) of U.S. Senators Donald Riegle and Carl Levin, at 5 p.m. Monday evening, and remained there, shuffling between the offices, until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Ruth Broder and a staff in Levin's office similarly "hosted" the demonstrators. In Levin's office, be- cause of the confidential- ity of manuscripts in the senatorial suite, the group was limited to the conference room. They smoked and ate apples, and only a request that smoking be limited was the only restrictive treatment accorded the visitors. There were sev- eral Jews among the pro- testors. The condemnation was not limited to Israel. The United States shared a role as a target, and Israel was blamed for the Beirut mas- sacre. • As in all other demon- strations of this character, Israel was called the brutalizing force, and not a word was uttered about the admitted fact that in Beirut it was a tragedy of Chris- tians murdering Muslims. The action in the name of the Palestinians was part of a series of demonstrations against Israel and the U.S. in Dearborn and downtown Detroit. Bingham Center 30600 Telegraph Rd., Suite 1233 Birmingham, Mich. 48010 645-6655 and Levin were in Washing- ton and the demonstrators said they were protesting "the shocking similarity be- tween the Senators' un- willingness to honestly re- spond to their concerns and President Reagan's un- willingness to take appro- priate punitive actions when faced with repeated Israeli violations of the Habib agreement which had been guaranteed by the U.S. government. "The U.S cannot continue to sit idle while genocide is being committed against the Palestinians and Lebanese people in Leba- non. Just as you, Mr. President, hold the Israeli government responsible, so do we. In addition, we hold you responsible, Mr. Re- agan, as you guaranteed the safety and security of the civilian population in 'west Beirut." Their demands were: • • Stop all U.S. aid to Is- rael. • Immediate and uncon- ditional withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Leba- non. • • Redirect all U.S. budgetary allocations for Israel to jobs and human services. • Convene immediate hearings in Congress to in- vestigate the failure of the U.S. government to fully implement the guarantees of the Habib agreement. Levin sent word to the protesters that he would meet with a committee from their ranks either in Detroit or in Washington and he issued this state- ment in response to their demands: "All Americans are hop- ing that the perpetrators of the despicable massacre at Shatila and Sabara camps in Beirut will be brought to justice. While it does not appear that Israeli soldiers participated in the slaugh- ter, if they were aware of the nature of the murderous acts intended, and permit- ted them to take place or if they did not act promptly to stop those acts once their character became known, then those soldiers must be held accountable for their actions or inaction also.
