Weizmann Prof. Researching New Uses for Lasers
REHOVOT — The con-
trol of chemical reactions by
the use of lasers is the focus
of research conducted by
Prof. Amnon Yegev, incum-
bent of the newly-
established Stephen and
Mary Meadow Chair in
Laser Photochemistry at
the Weizmann Institute of
Science.
Prof. Yegev is probing the
ways in which laser light
supplies the energy neces-
sary to effect chemical
change. His team of insti-
tute scientists was among
the first, several years ago,
to utilize extremely accu-
rate infrared laser beams
for the precise separation of
isotopes — varying forms of
the same element that have
identical chemical proper-
ties, but different atomic
weights.
Once separated, these
isotopes have many practi-
cal applications. In research
and medicine, for example,
a particular isotope can be
incorporated as a label or
tab, and traced through a
living organism without
disturbing its normal func-
tioning.
Prof. Yegev is also par-
ticipating in the nation-
wide effort to develop
solar ponds as a means of
utilizing the sun's energy
for generating electricity.
He serves as a consultant
to Ormat Turbines, de-
signers and producers of
the special power plants
used for generating elec-
tricity from the hot water
of solar ponds. His par-
ticular interest is the
heat-transfer and ther-
modynamic properties of
fluids used with these
turbines.
Born in Israel in 1936,
Prof. Yegev holds an MS de-
gree from Jerusalem's He-
brew University, and a
PhD from the Weizmann
Institute. He joined the in-
stitute's Isotope Research
Department in 1966, after a
post-doctoral stint at the
University of Zurich in
Switzerland.
During his sabbatical
year in 1975, he worked for
the Israel Ministry of De-
fense, returning in 1977 for
three years to serve as De-
puty Chief of Research and
Development in that minis-
try.
